It looks like the configuration of the European intake side is significantly less complicated to get to #3 due to the EGR assembly differences, no?

I'm trying to gauge how long to allow to replace my 4 original plugs (no codes) with the etecno ones that are sitting in a box in the garage.

Do you have the OEM 7V glow plugs in use or have you already changed to the 12V glow plug kit?

a pre-owner of my KJ already has changed the relais... :BANANA:

I thought I would post my morning Etecno experience since we are catching the edge of the cold blast in the center of the country.

The Jeep had been sitting outside all night in 5-10F weather. It was 10F at start. Block heater not plugged in. Battery is a 3 year old Duracrap from Autozone. It cranks a lot slower than my 2 year old Sears P1.

I waited for the plug light to go out and it cranked and chugged slowly for about 5 seconds before it caught and ran on 2 or 3 cylinders for another 5 seconds, then smoothed out.

So far I've had 100% success at 10F with both CRDs running the Etecnos. At 0F a couple weeks ago the other wouldn't start on the first 5 tries. I had to leave it and come back in a few minutes, when it finally caught and ran on 1 or 2 cylinders for a while.

Dan -

With absolutely 0 experience in changing out "glow" plugs, but plenty of the sparky kind experience, it took me about 2.5 hours to change out all 4.

Keep in mind I do hold a journeyman's card in a mechanical craft and a degree, but alas it only took about 2.5 hours.

Make sure you plug your block heater in before you do it, it'll make the old ones come out easier, make sure you pre-soak all the plugs in PB'laster or something similar.

Go slow, take your time, work INSIDE this time of year.

If you are talking about the ASD relay and the Radiator fan relay, the part # is 04671168

Most auto parts stores carry those in spades, just have them look up your vehicle, or take one inside.

12V glow plug kit?

The USA models came out with 7 volt glow plugs which can be upgraded to 5 volt plugs with a new plug controller and re-programming of the ECU.

Early Export CRDs, like mine, have 11 volt glow plugs. There is no glow plug controller...the plugs are powered ON by two large relays for a certain time as calculated by the ECU direct from the +12 volts battery supply. They are 11 volt plugs because there will definitely be a 1 volt voltage drop across the relay contact points.
There is no error checking on this 11 volt system....your plugs could be burnt out and the first clue you will have is that your Jeep is sluggish in starting when the weather is cold. :shock:

This does not really worry me as I live in a warm climate all year round. :lol:

I am not sure if the 2004 Export models also have this 11 volt system...I will have a look in the Parts Fiche for the different part numbers and report back here. :wink:

OK I have checked the parts list:

2002/2003/2004 Export 2.5/2.8 Diesel uses glow plug part number 05066840AA....this is the 11 volt glow plug.
2005/2006 USA and Export 2.8 Diesel uses glow plug part number 05142577AA....this is the original 7 volt ceramic.

Yep, I'm having a similar problem. Replaced ceramics (which looked OK) with the metal Etecno back in October/November time frame. Just got a P1265 (#3) yesterday morning when it reached 15F (in Texas!!!). That was scary, I was expecting parts to be on the driveway. Anyway will start with the resistance check and order both relays. Thanks for posting the part numbers.

I have had 0 trouble with the factory originals, but I have a 2005 with 95k miles, so I figure I'm on borrowed time. The engine heater is a good tip! I've been using it the past few nights (it was 4 in ATL last night). Cylinder #3 scares me and I don't want to get the entire intake elbow broken down just to find out it's stuck... but I'll have to either clean up a lot of my garage or wait a few weeks for warmer weather regardless

I'm sorry to barge in...
I'm the owner of a 2006 crd 2,8 with 115,000km and I live in Montreal, Canada.
The Liberty has no modification and maintenance was done has per owners manual EXCEPT the glow plug swap.

My Jeep hates cold weather ans refuses to star. Up until now a boost would reanimate it but that comes to be trouble to do every morning and it cant be good on the long run. I qualify myself has a dummy for mechanics, so please dont be to harsh and pictures would be very much appreciated.

Dealership prices are out of this galaxy. GP 7v $155 + tx EACH. Plus modual and reflashing and time...
For that reason I've been reading lostjeeps for information on glowplugs and now I'm all mixed up.
I have found another dealer that will install parts that I provide.

1- How do I know if the GP's are 5v or 7v ?
2- Once question no.1 is cleared up, can someone provide a direct link to the GP that does not require re-flashing the computer ?
( IDPARTS seems to have your blessings !)

Regarding the voltage of your plugs, you could have a look at the first one which is easily accessible. If it has a red ring on top of it, then it's a 5v plug, if the ring is white then it's a 7v. If you can't see any ring, then you can't really tell. I'm pretty sure that if you buy from www.dieselglowplug.com you can have the GX3123 (http://www.dieselglowplug.com/gx3123-di ... -2032.html) that fits both voltages but you have to check shipping prices to see if it's worth it.

Yes, the engine came out with a 7v glow plug system, then one day the Bosch decided not to produce the 7v glow plugs anymore and Jeep came out with a 5v reprogramming kit, or at least this is the story that I know. By the way, take a look at this sentence, straight from the manual: "CAUTION: The glow plug system is a 7 volt sys-tem. The glow plugs DO NOT tolerate any over voltage. Full battery voltage will destroy the glow plug immediately. DO NOT test the glow plugs with a 12V source as damage will occur to the glow plug"
25$ and free shipping is a definitely a bargain, how can they do that??? I pay each plug 30,50 € and i live a bunch of km away from the factory!

I'll summarize my understanding:

Factory was 7v ceramic.
Later Chrysler released an updated 5v steel plug (and kit) which required an ECM reflash and included a new glow plug module.
Then Etecno released a 7v steel plug as a direct replacement for the OEM 7v ceramics, not needing a new glow plug module or reflash.
Now it seems within the last 6 months Etecno has released a new design of GX3123. It's advertised as a 7v steel plug (same as it was before) but is designed to be a suitable replacement for both the factory 7v steel and the factory 5v steel without any changes to existing glow plug modules or ECM flashes. Some other helpful info:

To determine what glow plugs you have, it's not enough to check the part number on your glow plug module. Visually inspect the glow plug behind the alternator bracket with a flashlight.

If plug has a white ring = 7v
If plug has s a red ring = 5v

Glow plug modules:

56044671AA: factory glow plug module for 7v ceramic
56044671AC: updated glow plug module - included as part of 5v conversion, and according to this post it also works for 7v ceramics.

The Glow plug module on presently is an 56044671AA. (factory glow plug module for 7v ceramic )
Question: can I get a replacement module for that specific one ?

I will check for the GP itself 2morow. Hopefully I will spot it.

It's my understanding the 56044671AC unit replaced AA. The AC unit should work for either the 5v or 7v glow plugs.

I did the Etecnos last spring and found the 3.5 year old optima was not up to running the plugs with temps in the 20F range. To say the Jeep was nearly impossible to start is an under statement. warmer weather, no issues at all. Then I put in a Walmart Maxx 34 in and the Jeep has started cold at 4 deg.F with little trouble. Starting cold is a 2 step. Turn it over for about 3-4 seconds, stop, then turn it over a second time and by 4-5 seconds, shes hammering fine. A strong battery must be part of your winter strategy more than ever with the steel plugs.
