CRD fuel tank problem

It appears that the vent/valve on the fuel tank of my 2005 CRD has stuck open, so some fuel will run out over the tank if I allow the gas pump to shut off automatically (kinda surprising it shuts off at all). Has anyone else had this problem? is the only fix to replace the tank?

only time I've ever had any issue like that - the Station had turned the pressure up on the pump

pump's too fast and causes everything to foam up - best solution was to manually run the pump handle so that you could slow it down.

as to the tank - the only thing there is a restriction in the opening to stop you from putting large nozzle's in

a couple of folks have removed that so they can use to large pumps for Semi's

(I'm sure there's a vent somewhere - but no one's reported a problem with it)

Yes, I have. Twice. The fix was to replace the tank... twice. Mine was the "roll over" vent valve on top of the tank. It is not a replaceable part unfortunately. Luckily it was replaced, twice, under warranty. Once last October, and again this past September. Not sure what caused it, and I hope it does not occur again as I am out of the warranty. Its a poor design. The replacement tank had a superseded part number, and works for both gassers and diesels. That may be part of the issue in itself...

I have heard of a few others with this problem, mainly the CRD's. It does not seem too common though. My guess is biodiesel or different fuels. I think PA has a 5 or 10% biodiesel mandate, at least they did. Maybe not all stations comply, so the switching back and forth, while on any other vehicle seems fine, but on this type system, a fuel tank made for a gasser, may have a weak point. I know when I travel, I get fuel at all kinds of different places. Just a thought... I could be wrong. My first tank I blamed myself... I ran B100 that a friend made/sold. After that tank failed, I no longer ran it, and it failed again, so I could not blame that on the B100 anymore...

I've had the same problem too. My 2006 CRD has 22000 miles on it and the other week I filled it up all the way to the top of the filler tube real slow so I could get a accurate MPG for that tank. I noticed fuel running down both sides of the back of the tank and dripping on the ground.

Yep, sounds like that stupid roll over valve...

I had the same thing happen to my 06 with 116k
I let someone else fill it. Diesel ran down the side of the tank

It has happened to me several times but its really random.
Sometimes I am able to jam fuel all the way up to the top of the filler neck and no leaks.
Other times it happens before I see foam in the neck.
I try to fill the tank slowly, then when I get to 18 gallons I start peeking down at the tank while
filling.
I regularly drive till the low fuel light comes on and try to jam in as much fuel as possible when
filling. I stop when I hit 20 gal or when I see fuel drip from the tank. But many times I get too
much foam and never get to that point.

Thanks for all the great info! My CRD has 110,000 miles, so warranty is not good. Darn. Also, my station just replaced all their pumps, so the pressure might be an issue. Since I can estimate fairly well how much fuel it will take at fill up, I can just stop short of over filling.

I don't think that is is a pressure issue exactly... It is more of a sticking float/faulty seat in the valve issue. When filling to the point that it is higher than the float, it will leak. Pressure plays a role, but even when driving with a full tank, parking in an incline with a full or near full tank, etc. It will leak. Been there more than once. Really it should be a safety issue. If it were gasoline I'd be more concerned. Don't expect any real help from Chrysler on it though... I didn't like having to wash the back of my jeep after most fill ups. The diesel fuel would eventually mess the paint and plastics up.

Happens to me on occasion too. I ran a few tanks of B20 through it and it seemed to free it up and now doesn't leak. My guess is it's just a float like in a wet/dry vacuum. Once liquid pushes it up it seals the hole.

For some control in this argument, I have a 2006 and I fill mine right up to the neck every time, I've never leaked any fuel from the tank area.
