Definitely sort of maybe or no. The lock button "logic" is it functions to prevent you from shifting into something bad when moving. Hence you can shift "up" 1, 2, D, N but not down under no case can you shift into R from any postion without using the lock button.

Sounds like something is out of adjustment.

Thought something was up:
My 05 CRD acts as you mentioned it should.
My 06 CRD, not only has a "sloppy" & "loose" feel to the plastic shift handle, it allow me to freely move (without button depression) from 2nd - Reverse.
...I'm told these shifter's cannot be fixed, but instead get replaced as a complete unit?

What I do know is a lot of things that cannot be fixed but must be replaced can in fact be fixed just not by a dealer. Whether the shift lock is one of those things I do not know. You might pm/email some folks like geordi, sir sam, etc. and/or do a post entitled something like "how can I fix the shift lever lock button"

No, you shouldn't be able to pull it through the range without using the lock button. This is a safety issue so the first thing you need to do is file a report with NHTSA.

Yes it can be fixed but the dealer will try and sell you a complete assembly.

Here is my solution viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50773

It's worked flawlessley since I installed it about 4 1/2 years ago and I expect it to outlast the vehicle.

I'll try and remember to dig out the pictures and and fix the links to them this evening.

I'm surprised that you aren't also having problems removing the key. If you haven't already had this symptom you probably will at some point.
