So I've been testing this ODB device for work made by Delphi sold by Verizon Wireless. It tracks the vehicle and monitors malfunction codes and a few other things. I installed it this past Monday and one of the first pieces of data it asks you to enter is the current odometer reading.

At first I thought this was silly because I figured since this is a GPS based device and it "samples" your movement by taking location readings every so many seconds it would progressively become more and more behind as I drive the vehicle.

What is actually happening is exactly the opposite. Since I installed the unit I've drove about 100 miles according to the Delphi Connect and my odometer says I've driven about 90 miles. That's 10% and a huge discrepancy! I read on hear in the past where some have felt the odometer is a bit on the low side but I didn't think it was that bad!

I recently had my speedometer re-calibrated at the dealer, and now it seems my odometer is way off. Seems to be off by roughly 9%. I wonder if this can be fixed?

Funny you say that because my speedometer consistently reads about 5% higher than my actual speed. So I would say there's no way to fix it.

You can have your speedometer re-calibrated, so I am guessing you can get the odometer re-calibrated as well. I am going to check into this eventually. My speedometer read 63-64mph at 60mph, now it is only maybe .5 mph off at most.

The odometer and the speedometer have different settings for the revs/mile of the vehicle, one is set in the BCM the other the ACM. If you have access to a DRBIII you can program them to be accurate.

IIRC stock is about 710 revs/mile for the odo and 721 for the speedo......you do the math, but thats where the discrepancy comes from.

My Jeep is shod with brand new Cooper Discoverer CTS in 225/75-16's. My odometer is less than .1 miles off in a 5 mile odometer check section. The speedometer reads 1 mph different from my two GPS devices at 75 mph - higher by about 1. When I was using a borrowed DRB-3 to check out my rig, I noticed you can calibrate your odo and speedo by telling it how many revolutions per mile your tires go. most tire companies publish this data publicly. Sadly, Cooper does not on their website.

The tires are spec'd as 29.13 in diameter.

My odo reads low by about 5-6% and my Speedo reads high 5%.

I am curious what the MPG calculator uses in the EVIC. I took a 7 hr trip and tracked it using GPS and came in about 5% lower MPG than the EVIC's said it was, therefore i am assuming it is somehow tied to the speedo since deriving from the speedo would suggest that you are going 5% farther than you actually are.

^^^ so 692.3 Rev/mile

Sam: Can you explain this a bit more? Does it work on the 2006's? My buddy at the dealership did not think it could be done. I am awaiting a call back from him now. I did the math... my odometer is roughly 8% slow. 37.6 known miles reads 34.3.

mass-hole,

I believe the main problem with the EVIC fuel economy calculation is due to accurately tracking how much fuel is burned. Even with a spot-on odometer I don't believe the displayed fuel economy would be all that accurate.

Also, I have noticed that the dashboard odometer and the EVIC odometer are actually measured differently. (And what's with the EVIC odometer trying to mimic a wheeled display including mimicking the rotational misalignment from one wheel to the next?) On a really long trip, I noticed that they eventually diverged but only by a very small amount. I think I will re-measure this on my next trip to St. Louis.
