Extras to change with timing belt/ water pump?

Hello - gearing up for the big 100k timing belt/ water pump change. Unfortunately due to a crazy work schedule I'm probably going to have to farm this out. I found a good shop that will do the work and is OK if I supply the parts. I have all of the standard TB/Water Pump/Theromstat parts but want to see if there is anything else I should get replaced while I have the mechanic in there. Basically I figure anything that he has to remove anyway I might as well have it replaced with new parts because I won't have time myself to get into there anytime soon. Here is what I'm thinking:

All of these are original except the serp belt which I changed at about 50k.

For Sure:
Serp Belt
Upper and Lower Radiator Hoses
Both Intercooler Hoses
Replacement coolant - flush and fill.
(thanks to advice on this thread I've now added the serp belt tensioner and two thermostat hoses to the 'for sure' list)

Maybe - what do you think?:
Serp Belt Tensioner
Thermostat to viscous pump hose
Thermostat to water pump hose
Fan Clutch???

Anything else I'm missing?

How's your thermostat holding up? still 1/2 tick from straight up?

Ah yes - thank you for the reminder - the thermostat is on the 'for sure' list as well.

Edit, it was not on your list but in the title? So the list is the extras?

Flying J - if you OEM tstat is holding the temp gauge slightly left of center under normal operating conditions I would not recommend replacing it although I would recommend having one on the shelf for future use. They are a bit pricey and not terribly long lived but replacing it just because makes little fiscal or time sense UNLESS the tstat you have in there now is 40-50,000 miles old as that seems to be the upper end of how long they last.

In point of fact tstat replacement is not a required part of the TB job and the amount of time spent replacing it during or independent of a TB job is essentially identical. The minor exception is if your TB job includes the water pump you might save 10 minutes doing the tstat as the same time as doing the tstat independently does require draining a half gallon or so of coolant which can be captured and reused.

Definitely replace thermostat if original. Replace serpentine belt tensioner. Ours failed 10k miles after changing TB. You can save time/money by just replacing the front of the water pump.

I would definitely replace the serpentine belt & tensioner and maybe the idler pulleys while in there. I did not replace mine when I did the timing belt job and wound up having to go back in a few weeks later to get the serpentine belt & tensioner. The tensioner spring had gotten weak and was letting the belt vibrate at idle... :JEEPIN:

SB tensioner failure involves the housing separating. It then jams the ps pulley and throws the belt off leaving you with no ps, engine driven fan, viscous heater or alternator. Will run until the battery goes flat, though.

excellent advice - thank you - I'm going to do the serp belt tensioner for sure now.

I am also going to get to the thermostat as well. I've got close to 100k on the original thermostat so I've gotten my moneys worth. It does not seem to be warming up as fast this winter so it may be on its way out anyway, and I want to do the two hoses that connect the thermostat to the water pump and viscous pump. After I got to looking at it today I may or may not have the shop do it with the timing belt - probably come down to how much more they want for it.

Last question - just want to confirm the Zerex G-05 is the right stuff to replace the factory coolant with.

Yes if you got 100,000 miles out of the OEM tstat consider yourself lucky although I'd keep that puppy on the shelf just in case your replacement doesn't last as long and you need a replacement quickly.

When you replace the tsat:
1. the back lower bolt can be a bit of a challenge. A 1/4" drive socket (10mm if memory serves or maybe 8mm) and a 6" "wobble" 1/4" drive extension help getting in there.
2. the original gasket tends to stick to the aluminum head surface but can be removed by careful scraping from the back to the front with a razor blade scraper (just the blade with a backing on one edge that fits into a scraper - google razor blade scraper if need be) but be gently so you don't gouge the aluminum surface of the head.
3. a bit of RTV black helps hold the gasket in place while mounting the new tstat.

In my experience the tstat has less influence on how long warm ups take than does the ambient temp; type of driving; and use/no use of block heater. The real key to determining if the tstat is shot is whether or not the temp gauge can reach and hold, in anything but extreme cold, a position just a bit left of dead vertical. In my case mine would get to the proper position if and only if the ambient temp as ca. 70F + and if only a bit above 70F I ran the AC; anything much below 70F reaching the correct temp gauge position simply did not happen.

Actually I'm in Reno - I looked at that option but just couldn't make the timing or location work.

On the positive side I do have an appointment at one of the 'trusted mechanics', KD Automotive in Fallon, for next week. I'm bummed because I've always done my own work but just don't have time or space for this one, but they seemed to know what they were doing when we talked on the phone.

Got those last couple of items en route from idparts (great service by the way)
