I pulled the console, and remove the shift cable from the ball socket and it goes any where I want, so I doubt it is the plastic rod in the shifter, I could not push the cable forward to get it into park, and could not start it. It is at a very busy location so I was not able to crawl under neath. But I am thinking I need to remover the linkage or see why it will not move. I will have to do it in the AM when no one is there, and I can get under the Jeep.

Any one else have this problem before?

Cannot help you with park but will it go into the R/N/D? If so you can crank it up in Neutral and drive it to a more workable location.

Well you would not believe how it all went down? So I decided to stop being a wimp  and headed back over to the place with a piece of cardboard and a couple of tools to pull the ball socket off the transmission detent lever. Son of a B!tch, that detent would not budge even hitting it with a hammer, I am screwed, wrecker time! :banghead:

So after some intense thinking and hanging up on the wrecker company before they answered, I decided to head back home and get some channel locks. It was only a couple of miles from home. So when I got back it still did not want to move, so what the hell, time for some brute force.

I managed to get it loose to the point it would move between the detents with very little force. It was pulled nose in, I pushed it to reverse, and the wife backed it up, the I put it in drive and told her to drive my libby back and I would take hers with the shift problem. So I pull into a 4 lane state highway 2 lanes E and 2 lanes W and son of a B!tch, it falls out of gear into neutral. But what are the chances that a pickup truck with a plow and beacon light on is partially in the striped passing lanes broken down just behind me, so that I could somewhat safely crawl under neath and put in back in D? Am I lucky or what? You cant even make stuff like this up?

So half way home it comes out of gear again this time on a less busy county road, I pulled to the right as far as I could with 3' snow banks and had the wife set behind me with the other libby 4 ways on. I think it was hitting the disconnection shift cable and knocking it out of gear from drive line twist caused by acceleration, so I took it easy the rest of the way and made it home.

So it is in my garage I will have to pull the pan and see what happened. :5SHOTS:

Of course I could not get that lucky and have it be a simple cable problem. :furious:

The head gasket was my Xmas and New Years present this is my Valentines gift?

Well it all turned out for the best, the adjustment on the cable was way out and it caused the lever inside of the tranny to be pulled beyond the L1 detent, so it will be okay, I did find the cable is moving kind of stiff and most likely is the culprit. So I ordered a new cable and should be good to go.
