Need honest MPG help

I know that this question is asked all over the forums but I want to just get them all on on one topic page so here's the question What are the best ways of getting better MPG while running on these Duratracs 245/75R16's?

Also what tire pressure are you guys running with the Dura's? America's Tire only filled them to 35 PSI even though it says 50PSI cold right on the tire

Start with what psi is stated on the door jamb. I think its 33 psi all around iirc. A trick to see if your running a good pressure for your vehicle is the chalk test. Check out some youtube vids for an explanation on this.

I'm running 35 on mine, we basically have mirrored KKs as far as weight added and tires.

I don't have Duratracs, but 35 is probably good enough. The REAL mpg nuts inflate there tires to max sidewall psi which is crazy. The higher you go, the harsher the ride I believe.
Bump it up a few pounds and as long as it's not harsh, stick with that.
I'm running 36 psi on stock tires. Will try the same or slightly higher on my BFG's.

I run about 36psi in my Duratracs. As far as mileage, lately in the snow, 2wd, and a bit of messing around(pretty much all city btw) I'm getting 8.5mpg lol. If it's just normal city driving in the winter I get anywhere from 10-12ish if I'm really lucky. Highway, 14-16mpg. 16 is pure interstate, getting lucky lol

The best solution is to regear to 4.10's, but I don't think any of us have gotten that done yet, lol. The KJ folks can swap diffs with 4 cylinder Libby's to get this ratio, but for us KK's, it involves an expensive gear change. I believe Ted15 and Diggerfreek have done it (4.10's) and Jeepin_It_Real has even gone to 4.56's, but he's running 265's. I hope to regear to 4.10's someday, but it's a ways down the road.

In the meantime, I use some hypermiling tricks to get the most out of each tank:

In the city, I memorize the traffic light patterns and modulate my speed so I can hit them all (or as many as I can) rolling. I can achieve about 12 mpg city doing this. Stopping and starting every block kills the MPG's down to single digits. Not taking forever to get up to speed actually helps - don't be afraid to gun it a little when accelerating from a stop, as long as you can coast for a while after.

On the highway, I gain back 1-2 mpg by following 3 seconds behind semis and taking advantage of the air they push. I know you can improve this further by drafting closer, but it is both unsafe and unwise to do that. At 3 seconds back I can still avoid a retread or a dead deer that might appear under the semi. I can get 17 mpg highway doing this (more in summer with better gas), vs. 15 pushing the air myself. The KK is a brick, even more so with a roof basket and Duratracs!

On the upside, the KK is awesome in the snow and offroad. I wouldn't trade my 245/75/16 Duratracs for stock!!!

You could always reset your ecu and it might help mpg a little.
I sometimes forget how good of a hypermiler I am. Drove in a CRV today with a friend. Man was she hard on the brakes. :shock:
