Saw two interesting Jeep diesels selling at auction this week and I got a hookup that will get me any car for $300 over. One is a 2005 Liberty Sport 4x4 with 95,000 miles in nice shape, the other one is 2007 Grand Cherokee Limited 4X4 with 220,000 miles that has no key so they are selling it as a non-runner. That Grand intrigues me a bit being quite rare and with the high miles and inop, might go cheap. Any thoughts?

You answer yourself, it's an auction. If you are a do it yourself guy that can dominate a wrench and a screwdriver at the same time you will be happy with either one.

I disagree, the 3.0L in the Grand Cherokee is a notorious pain in the arse to fix, and it's not a sleeved engine if I recall, so if anything is wrong with the cylinders, it's scrap.

Mercedes doesn't want to support their Merc engine in the GC... Chrysler has basically disavowed both units entirely. The CRD is a PITA too, but most of her issues are well known by us now.

I'd think about the CRD, but cap the bidding at 4500, KBB value is somewhere in the 8-9 range, top auction isn't going to get anywhere near that high, or the buyer makes no money on the sale.

The GC is a total gamble, I'd only do that if it was around 2-2500... The mileage is high, the vehicle is questionable, and it is a computer nightmare to get a key programmed - that WILL require at least an hour of dealer time AFTER the locksmith makes you a new key.
