Oil drain plug?
Help.
I finally decided to perform my own oil changes after many years of not doing it myself.
I crawled under the 06 CRD. I found an Allen head screw located at the back of the oil pan where I think an oil plug should be. I also located the oil filter nearby, so I am assuming the Allen head screw is the drain plug. Before I remove the Allen head screw I decided to ask y'all if that truly is the oil plug. I don't want to remove it to find I removed the wrong plug.
Please help.
Thanks.
Hank

Yes, that is the correct drain plug. Please be careful not to overtorque the plug when re-installing it. You do not want the hassle of dealing with a stripped drain plug hole. Better yet, install a fumoto oil valve there and never have to deal with the drain plug again!

You will need to firmly grip the OD of the plug with vice grips while simultaneously applying torque with an allen key. You will strip the allen hex if you try to use just that. There is a factory plug that has a normal hex.

Thanks for the help.
I've considered the fumoto, but have read that the skid plate requires modification and the fumoto might stick below the skid plate if you don't modify the fumoto. Our skid plate is a real working version (many scrapes and dings) so anything hanging below might be in danger of being broken. Don't want to chance that.
OBTW, I just changed the oil. It took a full seven (7) qts to fill with WIX filter #51516. I read another thread that said if using a different filter it would take seven qts instead of the 6.4 qts stipulated by the manufacturer. I wonder if that thread was describing the capacity in litres? Seven qts is approximately 6.6 litres.
Just wondering.
Thanks again to all who helped.
This is a great forum.

I have a set of Allen head wrenches from Craftsman that fit a 1/4 inch drive ratchet. One of them fit precisely with no wobble. It worked fine without using the recommended vise grip. I also tightened the screw using a 1/4 inch drive ratchet with a short handle. I'm 73 years old and probably can't strip that screw with my brute force  and the short handled ratchet.
Thanks.

I have probably done 24 oil changes in the last 150,000 miles on mine.
I haven't had any trouble with the original Allen socket drain plug.
Just be sure not to cross thread the fine threads, and most importantly, make sure that the copper washer hasn't fallen off of the drain plug.

hankdz - WIX filters-oil 51515 (7 qts oil) vs 51516 (stock 6.3-6.4 qts oil). The oil dipstick is well known for being inaccurate with a full fill often only midway between low and full. If you put 7qts in with the 51516 you overfilled and the excess will likely exit relatively quickly via the CCV thru the turbo/intercooler/intake.

I have a fumoto and factory skids. The bottom of the fumoto valve is about an inch above the top of the skid with no modification. WIX 51515 is the filter you're probably looking for. These are what I use with a 6.5 qts of oil. That puts the oil about 1/4 down from the max line on mine which is where I try to keep it.

I've not done quite this many but never had any issues with stripping of the hex socket or threads either.

I'm also still on the original copper washer. I just anneal it between each use to restore it's malleability.

This washer is essential as it prevents the unthreaded portion of the plug entering the pan an stripping out it's threads.

6 litres of oil is the correct amount with OEM size filter. Note what that reads on your stick. That is your correct "full" mark. Do not overfill.

Would like to add my :2cents: to the volume discussion.
Agree with what has been said but would also like to add that the rear seal my be compromised if the oil level is too high.
The Volume is bang on 6 l which is 6.4 quarts (conversion factor 1 US quarts = 0.946 l).
Suggestion:
Re- calibrate (new notch for correct volume) the dip stick and measure volume every oil change.
A correct reference mark keeps an accurate check on whether or not you are using oil or other negatives are increasing it between oil changes.
Double check that the line corresponds to the oil level during oil change when you start up and check for leaks at the end.

Notably, the measured volume is well below the "full" indicator mark on the dipstick.
It shouldn't vary at all from your mark.

Thanks for penny's worth.
When I stopped at 6.4 qts, and after running the engine for a couple of minutes to fill the filter, the level was showing at the "M" in the "MIN" indicator. It took the remaining 6/10ths qt to reach the "MAX" line.
DO you think I should remove the overage as the engine burns very little oil?

I determined level with 6L oil and the factory filter early on. It's just slightly above the midpoint on my dipstick. This is only letting the engine sit about 10 minutes after backing down the ramps. I noticed that if I top it off I get a lot of oil through the crankcase vent (back when I was running the condenser) so I avoid that now. I leave it about 1/4 below max and it usually takes half a quart to get it back there halfway through the 6250 mile change interval.

Thanks for all of the advice.
I decided to remove the overage. I took out 0.6 qts with a hand transfer pump. Many strokes. Now my old arms might be able to over torque the drain plug.
Fill mark is at the "M" on the "MIN". I measured between max and min lines and read approximately 1/2 inch. Will make a mark at both the "M" and 1/2 inch lower on opposite side of dip stick.
Again, thanks to all. Big help.
Hank
Oh, PS. I think I'll look into the Fumoto also. Based on Chester CRD post.

Hank that's a good thing to have done. I'm sorry I didn't get back on to answer your question. ChesterCRD described where the 6 l mark sits on my diptstick pretty well. Dipsticks are notoriously variable in the way they sit in the tube - each sits just so and it can make a big difference to the oil volume.
I think his comments re oil mist are also valid. I get a miniscule amount of oil by-pass also through being so diligent with the volume - I think. Recall you said it uses no oil. Good thing. It would be best (IF it did) to do what you've done and to add oil as needed. I wipe out CAC lines every 2 or so oil changes and get very little there as well as in the oil trap (like a ProVent).
