Shortly before our '05 was built, Chrysler made a running change and went to metric thread ring gear bolts. Apparently, they also added a small step to the bolts, as well. Detroit did not create an updated version for this. The "correct" ring gear bolts will not fit in the TT housing. Randys R&P cannot help.

We have resolved to remove the step from the new metric bolts rather than drill out the TT housing which is incredibly hard. I am afraid this may create a stress riser and make the bolts more likely to fracture.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Did you buy the new style DTT or the old style? Front or rear?

Can't speak to an 05 as mine is an 03 but on my front diff a G2 Master install kit for a "JK" was used with the exception of the pinion bearing and crush sleeve. This included new ring gear bolts which worked with my Tru Trac.

It is in the rear. I ordered it from Randy's for an '05 Liberty CRD. Have to check part #s. Is there a "new style" for the metric ring gear bolts? Is there something that makes the two styles easily distinguishable visually?

Yeah that is the correct one for the rear. You must have a early version of a '06+ 8.25 which is completely different then any other 8.25.

You should be using new ring gear bolts anyways,a complete master install kit will come with new ring gear bolts.

Checked with Eaton who referred me to Drivetrain Specialists. They confirmed that there "are no bolts that fit". They indicated that they turn down the bolts, exactly what we resolved to do. (BTW, the new bolts in the master install kit from Randy's are identical to the OEM bolts we took out.)

Thanks as always for your input,

:banghead: So I take it I'll be up against the same problem when I put in my rear TT? Are you having a machine shop turn the bolts? I imagine they are too hard for a guy to do with just a regular die set? What's the added cost for this procedure?

Thanks for bringing his up so the rest of us can avoid a painful surprise

Cost $50 to have a local shop turn the .017" step in the new bolts down on a lathe. I believe CATCRD has a TruTrac in one of his CRDs. I thought he might comment, but perhaps he has not been around the last couple days.

The other option is to drill the ring gear carrier section of the TT, but for a variety of reasons, our local shop went with turning the bolts. DTS also confirmed this is the better way to go.

I've never heard of this issue for the rear but I know there is a issue for the front but they started making a new style DTT with dual bolt holes, one for metric and one for SAE.I had to use spacers when I installed my DTT in the D30A but that was before the dual bolt style DTT,though it was the new style 3 gear DTT.

Ah ok, many thanks! $50 isn't bad. I don't recall any extra holes in the front TT I put in mine a few months ago. It went in with no surprises.

The shop that installed the DTT in the rear of my 05 didn't call me about any issues, but it's a fairly early 05.

CAT, when you get a chance, could post your build date? Am picking up ours today and will post that info a little later.

Thanks,
