I looked around, but couldn't find anything about how long our OEM starters last, and I want to replace it prior to being 45 miles down a wilderness road in 18" of snow.
Anyone know about how many miles theirs failed at, if at all?

Thanks for any input!

If you maintain your KJ,IE keeping the under carriage clean,it should last as long as the engine does if not longer.Granted if you do a lot of short trips with constant hot restarts or extreme cold weather starts(0 degrees and colder) it will shorten the starters life span.

Alright, thanks. I'm thinking at 165k that I'll rebuild or replace it in the near future. Who knows how much abuse the PO's gave it.

Right on, thanks for the numbers, I guess I'll hold out and hopefully get the hesitation before a catastrophic failure.

I think a bigger problem would the getting the computer to tell the starter to work..
but the starter is used a lot..the selinoid throw won't make the contacts work
or the brushes will fail..
but that going to take a long time. or lots of starts..long cranking starts..
there are other things to loose sleep over..nah I won't list them..
I need my wife jeep to stay running..;)

just my thoughts
