2006 Liberty crd check engine light.

I just bought a 2006 Liberty crd with 112k on it. It has a check engine light, but when I took it to Advance auto they couldn't read the codes. It runs and starts good, but I want to know why I have the light. What kind of reader do I need? Any tips?

I use a Scangauge to read and clear codes on my CRD.

A lot of people use Torque for Android with an OBDII Bluetooth dongle:

Same trouble , can not even connect with my "elm 327" and torque pro !

Some cheap ELM327's will not connect. Which one did you buy?

I didn't buy a code reader yet. I just had Advance auto try to read the codes, but I don't know what type of code reader they had.

I got advance to read my codes yesterday,, no problem at all with reading it did take about 20 seconds for it to connect. would not pull abs codes which I was pretty sure it wouldn't

If all Advance Auto stores have the same readers I should have got codes. Maybe they didn't wait long enough for the reader to connect.

Apparently some crd owners leave code readers plugged in all the time to get the codes and additional fuel mileage info etc. I may end up going that route especially if I do an off road tune. I want to know if I loose a glow plug or 2 and having a constant engine light will be a problem seeing when that happens. I already have the check engine light and I didn't unplug my air flow sensor yet.

be very careful going that route. read and ask questions, I have a bullydog monitor with pyro and it freezes, doesn't display all readings and to top that off I was going down the road doing about 80mph and my libby decided to downshift. yea that will wake you up, come to find out from some of the guru's on here some scanners cause it to downshift cause all your computers are competing to be in control and it can cause all sorts of issues. I unplugged mine and no problems since. I think the guys are having good luck with the ones that work blue tooth with a windows or android smart phone. im gonna give one of those a try. these are cantankerous sometimes and if your money is like mine I don't like spending hundreds of dollars on stuff I cant use :banghead:

This weekend my friend connected his Imova 3130 scan tool and we got a P0299 turbo under boost code. He cleared it, but it came back after about 3 starts. I will start troubleshooting. I heard a vacuum leak would cause this. Any ideas on where to look?

Look also at the intake hoses, if they haven't been changed, they are probably rotten and developing holes.

The vacuum system for the turbo uses 5 main parts, working back from the turbo:
the vac motor on the turbo (shouldn't break)
The vac modulator (little buzzy thing with "paper fuel filter" under it) that does sometimes break
Vacuum storage box (just a box, shouldn't break)
And the vac solenoid that closes when the engine is shut off, to try and preserve some vacuum so the turbo spools quicker when you start the engine the next time.

The vac modulator is the likely suspect, IF it is bad. How to check: unplug the hose going to the turbo. The arm of the turbo under the vacuum motor should move about a half-inch. If it doesn't then you have a vac supply problem. If it does... Then the process continues.

I think you are saying unplug the vac modulator with the engine running then look for turbo arm movement. Is this correct? Where is the turbo arm? is it under the turbo?

You need to unplug the vacuum hose to the turbo - the big silver circular thing on the top is the vacuum motor. The rod is underneath that.

You could also simply be getting the low boost code if the MAP sensor hasn't been cleaned regularly. That is where I would start. Should be done every 2nd or 3rd oil change if you're stock less often is OK with the GDE tune.

Several comments other than the obvious do the TB job ASAP unless you have proof that it's been done:
1. the 05/06 CRDs have hybrid, for lack of a better term, computer systems such that standard code readers (includes GDE's flash tool) will only read what I'd call engine or ECU codes. They will not read transmission (other than the generic 0700 ECU transmission code that simply says there are stored transmission codes) or brake codes. For complete code reading you need access to a DCJ code reader or after market equivalent and they are pricey.
2. leaving a code reader plugged in while you are driving is a bad idea. It might work for a while but there are way too many forum reports of vehicle operational problems being caused by keeping the reader plugged in. Apparently long term on the go reading of codes causes the vehicle computers to eventually go nuts, fortunately unplugging the reader is the solution.
3 P0299 can be a) EGR issue, per TSB 25-001-05 REV. A (Note - EGR can be cleaned instead of spending $s to replace - I suspect if you cleared the P0299 and then unplugged the MAF sensor, top of airbox outlet, to disable the EGR you might could get a hint if the EGR was having problems. Unplugging the MAF sensor throws a code which I think is different from P0299 so if you drive a bit and only get the MAF unplugged code, not a new P0299, then I'd suspect the EGR needs cleaning but if the P0299 comes back also then the EGR is likely ok. Hint - get a GDE tune and then you can forget the EGR)
4. P0299 can also be caused by a bad vacuum line(s) associated with the black vacuum tower between the airbox and the coolant tank including a possible melted portion of the vacuum line (Topan's post seems to have disappeared) where it runs behind the engine inside heat protection tubing. Inspect those lines.
5. GDE's instructions on the turbo vane check are "You can check the vane functionality at idle in park. Underneath the vacuum actuator on the turbo is rod extending downward connected to the vane mechanism. If you pull off the vacuum line at the turbo, the arm should drop about 1/2 inch and then raise back up after reconnecting the vacuum line. It is a bit difficult to see the rod, but this is the easiest method to check for proper VGT vane movement." If there is no movement either the vanes are really stuck or there is no vacuum to the actuator.
6. cleaning the MAP sensor is also a good idea as is a new air filter element if the one you have is old/dirty. FYI while in that area check the bottom of your airbox to turbo hose for a split on the bottom just in front of the turbo.
