Injector pulling tool for rent?

Well doing the timing belt i noticed that my #1 injector has a bad seal and is all packed in carbon. I dont want to take it to a tech for obvious reasons but am gonna need the puller as im sure its stuck in there pretty well.

Dont really feel like spending 700$ on it so i was wondering if anyone has the rool for loan/rent? Im in southern wisconsin.

I just twisted mine back and forth to break em loose, then pulled them out with a pair of pliers. There not nearly as bad as you think.

Yup, same here. That isn't so much "carbon" as it is just decayed leaves and other dirt that packs in on top of the o-ring (which is little more than a debris seal and balancer) so that the dirt hopefully won't get to the bottom of the hole.

The copper washer at the bottom is the only actual seal in the hole.

Once you wiggle it back and forth and get it out of there, use a shotgun bore cleaning kit (soft mops) drenched in brake cleaner to wash out the bore and clean the bottom out. Don't worry about anything getting down onto the piston, it will be blown out on the first few combustions. It isn't gritty anyway (usually) as it is just decayed plant stuff.

Its carbon and combustion gasses. The copper seal failed and all the soot and crap pushing out of the combustion chamber has filled up the gap and was piled up around it.

With the engine idling and water around it you can see.it all bubbling out. I work on larger diesels for a living and I have seen seals fail in this way it usually cements them in pretty good.

fcsteve777 - as I recall there is one bolt and a crows foot holding the injector in place. Given that it's #1 I'd suggest the best first step is to just go ahead and try to pull the injector - either it will come out relatively easily in which case you don't need the puller or it won't in which case you can put back the bolt and crows foot pending borrowing a puller.

Not fond of long distance loans but if you do need a puller shoot me an email or PM and we can likely work something out.

Yeah I found the o ring and washer within an hour of me so i may give it a go. Hopefully it cooperates

Another option - and this should be in your "big diesel mechanic bag of tricks" is to back the holding bolt off most of the way... And crank over the engine. The compression should pop it loose almost immediately.

Yeah that was a possible option. At 160$ in labor I think I'll give it a try myself. 1.4 hours. I'll just use plenty of penetrating oil and try to tease it back and fourth. Any way to stop all fuel flow from the HP pump?

Although I don't think I'd crank over an engine at work to try that lol. That's around 15 pounds of fuel injector on the smaller ones

I used a 24mm open end wrench as a sort of pry bar where the clamp holds it down.. Worked like a charm

I've worked my way about a half inch down thru the crud with kroil and some gentle picking. The seals show up today so we will see what happens

I have heard some guys in the Sprinter forum will looses the crow foot bolt and drive it a short distance like this to loosen the injector.

I removed the injector closes to the fire wall (TOTAL PAIN) with no special tools. Like others have said, working it back and forth really works. I am NOT a mechanic in the least, so if I can do it, anyone can : ) (But I'm learning)

Just spray some PB B'Laster on the injectors and pull them out by hand, work them back and forth first and then pull upward on them. A special tool is not required nor necessary.

A tie rod fork works pretty well as a lever to get them out. Worked like a charm on all four of mine. There's a sweet spot on the injector to grab, and you can find a decent spot on the manifold to use as a fulcrum to lift the injector.

Well i wasnt able to get it out. Im sure if it wasnt for being encased in the head by carbon i could have. I even fashoned a puller using a crows foot and prying and using a slide hammer. Most i could get it to do was rotate a tiny amount.

Bit the bullet and paid the 1.4 hours to have a tech do it. The copper seal wasnt doing anything judging by its nice even coating of carbon and no copper showing.

Of course the first time i picked it up "done" it was chugging it was leaking so bad and i had to get them to pull it back out and actually clean the bore instead of slapping it back in. Important part is its in and fixed now. Engine is ship shape and on to suspension.
