What was on your head and deck surfaces? The engines I have opened up, the surfaces only really needed a wipe to get the oil off that seeped from lifting the head. If you had overheating or corrosion issues, I can see where it would need stronger efforts, but I don't think Doc's will be like that.

I had some rust and oxidation, plus some of the black gasket adhesive. Mine was run for quite a while with a blown HG, but still ran like a champ.

Same. Some rust on the edges where the gasket does not cover the block. Some general crud...most likely soot/coolant from the head gasket leak.

Mine ran like a champ as well. The HG leak slowly worsened over time.
