HI guys,
I am new to the forum (posted an Intro Post) and I recently bought a Jeep Cherokee 2.5 CRD 2003 with about 80k on the clock. It's been well looked after with one previous owner and looks almost new. I have been very happy with it and have had it in for a service and cam belt change already.
I have read 'Sam's CRD Noob Guide' and have been working through all of the maintenance and mods available to better the life and performance of the jeep. I do however have a question which I cannot find the answer too.

I Have a 2003 model so no MAF sensor, just a plastic cylinder thing with a small filter underneath it and some pipes coming out of the top. I have plugged the 'OUT' pipe with a self tapping screw and pushed the rubber pipe back on for the covert look. As far as I know this has disabled the EGR system (to a degree?).

I have cleaned the MAP Sensor and it was covered in junk, it brushed up well and all is well now it's back in. Seems to be idling much better.

I am yet to do the Elephant Hose Mod, but wasn't sure if this was necessary as the EGR system is disabled from my mod to the plastic cylinder thing??? ( I apologies for the terminology)

I've changed the air filter, fitted a push bar with spots, mud flaps and possibly some 245/70/R16 bf Goodrich tyres.

All of this has been good but my main question being - I have heard that the engine temperature will now be higher due to the disabling of the EGR, various threads have touched on engine failer and the turbo requiring an idle of at least 5 minutes before shutting down, also something regarding opening the exhaust to lower engine temps?

I'm new to all of this and I'm just wondering of what I have done is beneficial and perhaps somebody out there can let me know their experiences if they too have made these changes?

Thanks for reading.

Howdy bloke!

There are many here more knowledgable than I, but it sounds like you're well on your way to a happy owner experience.

I ran the EHM from new and then disabled the EGR (electronically via SEGR) about three years in. Things cleaned up dramatically after the SEGR. I have no idea whether what you did to your thingy disabled your EGR or not or if a 2003 European diesel would even have an EGR. I would doubt the latter. I experienced no change in running temps with any of my mods.

I no longer run the EHM and my CAC hoses looked great when I replaced them a couple months ago.

Hope that helps.

The Export 2.5 CRD is a great vehicle...much less nannies monitoring everything like the newer 2.8 CRDs.

You did the correct thing by disabling the EGR by blocking up that small pipe on the EGR solenoid...greatly improves open road performance. The fact that your 2003 KJ has done a lot of mileage before you did that though means that your intake manifold is probably gunged up!

There is no problem of high engine temperatures by disabling the EGR...the Elephant mod is to stop oil being fed from the tappet cover into the turbo and hence into the CAC hoses and the intercooler...has nothing to do with the EGR. I do not like the idea of a simple Elephant mod as it drips oil on the paving and has an oily smell....you need a more sofisticated method of collecting the oil!

All turbo engines need a period of idle before shutting down....ecpecially after a long trip at high speeds...I let my KJ idle for about 4 minutes after a long trip at high speeds. Failure to do this will mean early turbo failure.

There is a link in Sams NOOB Guide to the Service Manuals but I will post it here in any case....the 2003 KJ Service Manual covers the general vehicle and has the circuit diagrams but the first thing to download is the "2.5_2.8 Export Diesel" supplement....this is the only download that covers our Export 2.5/2.8 engines...everything you need to know about the engine itself as well as the transmission etc.

Appreciate the reply and the info. Also thanks for the manual it should help tremendously with future maintenance.

Well I went ahead and cleaned out the intake manifold today along with the hoses and they were very gunked up. Is there meant to be oil on the MAP sensor normally, its clean just oily now?

I ended up doing the EHM, I plugged the hose that comes off the air intake with a rubber bung and bought a length of black rubber hose from the car tip. I had an unused small fuel filter off of a Rover, put a drain bolt in the base, drilled some holes at the top were the hose runs into it so the air pumps out the top and the oil collects at the base of the filter. You can unscrew the bolt and drain it every now and then. Ran it down the left side clear of anything and clipped it in good.
Will run it for a while, see what it's like but overall things need a bit more cleaning here and there.

Will note that i need to let it run for five minutes after a long run, love the jeep, well made and enjoyable as well as easy to work on.

Thanks for the help!

Hopefully the EHM will now stop the MAP sensor getting oily ever again!
