My main concern is the computer stuff and having everything work when I was done. I would like to swap in a good diesel engine and transmission that is not so prone to problems, will deliver good fuel mileage and will run for 500,000 miles.

I put 800,000 miles on my 89 C2500 GMC and have about 300,000 on 4 other 6.5 diesels. I want something with that level of dependability.[/quote]

If you want reliability, then get a Cummins 4BT and trans out of a bread truck. All mechanical with a very reliable P-pump. We use these at work as gensets for our scrap steel cars and they run full throttle 24hrs a day for three weeks at a time, then that's when they get filters/oil changed.

Or an older Mitsubishi or Isuzu out of those little cab over trucks. Japanese build great diesel engines.

The question remains as to how to get everything to work in the vehicle. I do not have a clue as to how you would make everything work with old school engine and transmission.

That's what makes the unknown fun and learning as you go. If your mechanically inclined, don't be intimidated. Its easier than you think. It just takes time and patience.

Those are 2 things that I have never had a lot of. I'd just as soon pay somebody for the hard work - figuring out what all has to be done and buy their innovations

When do I get to start on your project? I've got the shop and the know-how. Been welding/fabing 18yrs and run my own shop on the side. I'm a millwright too.

Before I got the CRD, I was actually looking for a Cherokee or 4 door S10 Blazer and was going to put in a Cummins 4bt. But was having a hard time locating a 4bt with a trans already attached. They typically came with a TH400 in those bread trucks. But then I ended up selling the wife's Camry much quicker than I thought, my truck went out of commission for a while, so I just didn't have the time for a project like that with only one vehicle running.
What's so nice about the Cummins over a Mitsubishi or Isuzu is that the 6bt is what they used up through '98 in the dodge trucks. They are the exact same engine, but missing 2 cylinders. So the bellhousings bolt right up.

mass-hole still interested int the torque converter?

I have had a few months to think about the issues I raised in the OP. I still have all of the same issues, and no desire to fix them, and need to fix the boot on the other cv joint, and have a clank that I cannot identify. My wife called yesterday saying her AC went out, turns out the discharge line had rubbed up against the CAC hose and wore a hole in the aluminium section of the AC hose, dealer only part, only 6 dealers in the entire country had one in stock, so I ordered one from my local dealer who charges full retail. I am now at 190,000 miles, with 80,000 miles on my current timing belt, I am thinking we are going to trade it in in a couple of weeks. I also have a rear window that has went out, I think I will fix that before I trade it, but I am not sure. The air in the coolant is rally bothering me, and the transmission cooler is leaking. The more problems I list, the more that I think I might have to pay someone to take it.

With all of that, does $4,000 sound like a fair number for a trade in?

As far as I'm concerned, it's way more fun than a car payment (I do have a back-up car with 213K miles on it that's also paid off  and therefore occasionally needing some obscure part :banghead: ) and besides, waiting for the next thing to break is pretty exciting, too :-)r .

These are my thoughts exactly. I'll never sell the Jeep.

Computer and hassle free diesel that goes forever Cummins 4bt and 6bt.

I hope to put a 4bt in a 4 door Wrangler (someday). I wouldn't waste my time doing an engine swap in a Liberty...not worth the time and money.

Totally agree, the issue with 4bt is the weight, and very serious mods to put it in a Cherokee. But it is a tough little 4 banger! Definitely a wrangler is a better candidate for it, you can reinforce the frame or lift the body to allow the 4bt to fit, I don't have that luxury in the Cherokee.

Recently I had some fun with the old 300SD, it is definitely a car where I can drink my coffee while driving the nasty cleveland roads without spilling it all over my shirt. I'll have some fun with it then throw the engine in the Cherokee.

I'm in Westlake and spent the last three years at CSU. When people ask me if I've ever been offroad or tried rock-crawling I tell them yes - on Euclid Avenue.

Lol, didn't think on that this way, in the whole downtown the roads look like after a major war, highway exits are closed half of them, driving from South is a pain... Did you relocate in Cleveland area?

I was born in Defiance (a long time ago...) but lived in Northern Virginia most of my life. I moved up here ten years ago. :JEEPIN:

:-)r :-)r :-)r Ok, now THAT is funny! I instantly thought of about 5 different places that I've been off-road in exactly the same way... Last week in Queens!

Driving my VW TDI around up there to get to the CRD members... I swear I drove into one pothole that had an elevator and ore train in it! Seems that some of the "roads" are better referred to as TRAILS for all the holes they have.

Maybe the Pope visited at some point... He hath blessed the roads, and made them holey. :seuss:

Looks like as soon as I win the lottery. Dang CRD has tapped us out. Need to get healthy and making money or win the lottery. Maybe I would have better odds if I bought a ticket.
