Hay all,
I never owned a Jeep or delt with Chrysler before...but after taking a CRD for a test drive I was hooked! I am currently overseas and will return in Aug so I had my hometown dealer in oregon look around for one. Well I didnt think he would find a loaded CRD that quick so I put a downpayment on it. I have been following this board for a month and pretty much know about the TSB's and other quirks this diesel has which dosent scare me much as I already own a powerstroke F-350 but would like some feedback on "If i'd only done this at the dealer before I drove away" kinda stuff. Also seems like the warranty from 05 to 06 models has changed? Is the extended warranty worth it for this vehicle? Anyone have any prices they paid for this? Thanks for the help.

There's a lot of USN driving Libertys. I'm not Navy, but I drive to work with 70% of them here in Norfolk. Anyway, good to have you aboard Dave.

I recall someone saying that they got the dealer to put different tires on the Jeep before they drove away. I would have done that if I could have gotten away with it.

Tire cover. Mine didn't have one and I had to get the salesman to take it off another Jeep so that I would have one. loaded Limiteds are supposed to come with tire covers and the tire cover is supposed to say "Jeep Liberty" on it...not the dealership's name.

They're also supposed to come with the rear cargo "security" cover, unless you get the cargo organizer (I love mine). Make sure you at least get the security cover.

Flashes and TSBs, make them do them before pick up. That should be part of the prep for delivery.

Make sure you have a full tank of fuel. I didn't and the dealership didn't have a diesel pump so they told me to bring back the receipt from a fillup and they'd pay me back. Brought them a receipt and got the "we'll have to send you a check" BS story. Never saw a check...not worth chasing them over.

If you're accustomed to being treated like you own a BWM...you're buying from the wrong company. Chrysler customer service is the worst I've ever dealt with...but the CRD KJ is just too great of a truck for me to stay away from them. This is not to say, however, that the mechanics are bad or that they don't do the work. It's just to say that you'll have to coax and poke and prod the service advisor all along the way to actually get it done...whatever it is. After it gets past the DC PR man (service advisor), the mechanics seem to do a good job. I would suggest going to a dealer that does service on the 1-ton Dodges, but that's not an option for everyone. It just helps to have experienced diesel techs messing with your truck instead of a gasser tech who got his cert by watching a 2-hour movie.

Get anything you can from them when you pick it up...'cause the butt-kissing ends the instant you drive off the lot. If you want a Jeep hat, drive away wearing it. If you drive away with a promise (to get something), then that's all you're going to get...a promise. There are Jeep tents and Jeep hats and bumper stickers and all sorts of other things with Jeep emblazoned on it. Get what you can, or what you want, if you want. I didn't care about any of that stuff...I just wanted my Jeep.

I got the extended warranty that covers oil changes and all replacement parts for...can't remember how long...something like "the life of the sun." I could be off by a decade or two though. Anyway, it didn't cost much at all and it seemed like a no-brainer. I don't know if all the Jeep locations will offer the same extended warranties though...kinda doubt it. But mine was the cheapest extended warranty...and I had them remove something from it to make it even cheaper. They'll work with you....just keep saying "no" until they get it where you want it. I, personally, wanted the extended warranty, but that's only because I really plan to have this truck until the Earth stops revolving.

Mine did not come with an owner's manual or the 7 pin to 4 pin adapter for the trailer hitch wiring. But the dealership was pretty good about getting those for free later.

Service, on the other hand, really sucks. Almost, but not quite as bad, as VW. For the 06 I'd definitely recommend an extended warranty because they will fight you on everything they can.

You never owned a VW have you? :roll: They live to just void a warranty at the vast majority of the dealerships. Our Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Sprinter dealer has been great, never a problem.

I just bought one as well. Went with the 100K warranty and read all the fix it stuff here. Congrats on your purchase - soak em for all you can!

I have finally found a CRD after having my order cancelled. I put an order in 4/27. That was before I found this forum and the bad news. I got lucky and found one that hasnt even arrived at the dealership yet.

Anyhow I am wondering just how hard I should push to get the tires changed. I am getting it at 1% under invoice through a deal between my employer and chrysler. Do I still have some leverage?

I have been reading around for awhile so lets see if I have things straight. Provent first, change to proper oil between 500-1000 miles, scrap the stock tires, extended warranty, make sure all TSB's are done, and dont be suprised if the techs are clueless.

Actually, I had a Jetta Wolfsburg before the Jeep. The two dealers that I dealt with during the life of that car (5 years) were great. Treated me like a king and called my car "Your Baby" (like, "We finished the oil change on your baby. When do you want to pick it up?" But I've heard some seriously bad reports on VW service, including from my brother. I guess I just got lucky (shrug).

Sounds like you have it straight Jeger.

I forgot to list the manual earlier. Thanks Rick Miley. Make SURE that you get the cool canvas manual holder and make REALLY sure that you get the CRD-specific owner's packet. There are different ones for the different engines.

And, if you have the towing package, get the 7-4 adapter.

Another thing that some dealers keep out of the vehicles is the floor mats. I yanked the carpet ones out pretty fast and replaced them with the Jeep slush mats, but make sure you get them anyway.

I have a copy of the window sticker and in the bottom left hand next to the VIN is a spot that says L4-VON 0656. Is this the build date of the engine?

Will dealers actually do the TSBs before you get the truck? My understanding on TSBs has always been they are there to help a tech resolve a "common" problem. They aren't preventative maintenance. I don't see a dealer doing transmission work on a brand new truck with no symptoms.
