I guess I'm a rebel. You should see the sh*t storm I started on a F150 forum when I shared that I use 5w40 in my ecoboost motor instead of 5w30.

I dont know why they would be so pissy about 5W-40 in the ecoboost. I would think if you are running that engine hard it will get nice and toasty and could benefit from the 40.

I been using T6 5w40 since I got my CRD in august 2009. It was the most recommended oil and easiest for me to buy locally for a good price. Wall-Mart, tractor supply and all the local auto parts stores have it. Mobile one 5w40 is not as easy to find where I am but not difficult. 0w40 is much more illusive and hard to locate.

I change my oil at about 6,250 miles more or less and send a sample to Blackstone labs yearly. Blackstone says my engine is always wearing well and showing less wear the last 2 tests. They say I can safely extend my oil changes to 8,000 miles but I'm hesitant to do so. .
not going to start or join in on any doo doo storm here..... I do what I do and it seems to be good, so until proven wrong I will do it. I agree with not using non synthetic oil due to the high temps the turbo creates

I was using T6 until Advance or Autozone had their fire sale on Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck Oil for like $8 a gallon. None of the people in the store believed me that it was $8 until they rang it up. I picked up 20 gallons so I should be set for a LONG time.

Right, for that price on Mobil 1 tdt, it's no brainer why using it, lol. I am a fan of Mobil 1 0w40 but currently use the cheap tdt from Autozone.

What's interesting is to see what flow a thinner oil would have, but as I know there is no gauge that tells that, and only careful inspection of pressure and temperature, plus some math, would be able to safely provide some correct answers.

I've been very disappointed by the F150 forums on the internet. The level of knowledge is sparse among many of the members, unlike here, and I'm surprised by how many truck owners can't even do their own basic maintenance and many use only but motocraft oil and parts because they are afraid their warranty would not be honored if they used something other than motocraft oil. Love owning the F150 but I've been spoiled by hanging out here and 2 other diesel websites/forums.

BTW, the ecoboost is direct injected and that combined with cold start emissions, poor crankcase ventilation causes a real problem with fuel dilution of the oil. In fact, some folks report dipstick levels increasing with mileage and the few UOAs posted show dilution from 30w to 20w in as little as 3000 miles. I use my F150 for nothing but towing and the towing I do is pretty extreme, e.g. Colorado towing over long grades and passes as high as 12,000 feet. I figure twin turbos , hard towing, fuel dilution, and some issues with timing chain stretch warrant the 5w40 which should do a better job resisting oil shear and still provide viscosity protection if diluted to a 30 weight. The naysays say I will damage the cam phaser operation but I never had an issue with cam phasers in my Triton 5.4 using 5w40....that 5.4L was such a slug that it spent most of its life at 3/4-full throttle operations just for it to get out of its own shadow.
