I replaced the passenger-side valve cover gasket on my 2003 Liberty. As I was getting ready to torque the valve cover bolts, I noticed a small metal cylinder (see attached pics) resting on top of the engine by one of the coil packs. Anyone know what this part is? Please help. Thanks.

Doesn't look like an engine part I'm familiar with.

I am hoping that it is not an engine part. I hate it when I have some surprise part that I do not know what it is, or where it goes. About the only other work that I have done on top of the engine is changing the spark plugs, but I still can't think of a part like this.

Glad my mouse is drawing some attention :-) It has been a good one, and the wheel spins nicely :-)

The new valve cover gasket fixed my oil leak. I no longer have smoke rolling out from under the hood at every stop light and when I park.

I only changed the passenger side. It tested my novice mechanical skills. I struggled with the heater hoses and the plastic clips that hold them. I tried to minimize the spilling of coolant, so it was a little slow removing the overflow tank and hoses (and I still spilled coolant). It is kind of a puzzle fishing out the top cover and reinstalling it. After doing it once, I could do it again in about 1 hour, but it took me about 4 hours the first time (yes, I am a little slow). But I am very glad that I did it and wish that I would have replaced it a year ago to fix the smoking.

Good to know.
My last vehicle needed the gaskets replaced all the time until I just decided to buy better valve covers.
How many miles are on your KJ?

Same here!

OP, Sorry, no clue what that is. It looks familiar but I just have no clue what it would be. Maybe something a friend picked up off the ground and was messing with, Sat it down there while you was working on teh vehicle and just left it there. Had a friend do that to me with a screw driver once.

Looks like left over copper tube some one was using to splice vac/emission hose together with after they found a crack

Or crap that bounced up into the engine compartment off the road, i caught someone's coffee travel mug on top of my manifold once, had to pull over and remove it when it started melting and sinking
