Any chance you have some photos of how your cai is set up?

I thought about getting an AEV brute force intake but I can't justify the price

When my rig was made they used a stupid baffle on the intake. It was a big rectangular box that was attached to the throttle body (said 3.7 L V6 on it), then an accordion hose to the air box.
This Pic from http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/2009-Dodge ... d:36710884

I removed the baffle and used a smooth bore RV sewer pipe to connect the throttle body to the air box, dropped in a K&N filter and added the RAM air hole (behind the grill and into air box) to eliminate the two 90° bends and restrictive square tube to/from the grill of the OEM inlet. Now I have both OEM in and RAM in, so air flow is very unrestricted.
I did this prior to Volant making their intake, which pretty much used the same design.
Because I used a smooth boar flexible RV sewer pipe, I eliminated the accordion bumps on the inside of the stock hose as well. Still not as smooth on the inside as a solid pipe, but the cost was next to nothing.
3" coupler

Smooth boar sewer pipe. Outside is rough, but inside has a second lining which makes it smooth.

RAM air hole.

Goes to grill.

Remember I drive a KA so things behind the grill are a little different.

Sorry for the small thread jack Gageraid.

It's all good. I recommend people get a CAI with the 4.7L throttle body since everything will be 3 inch openings this way.

Remember, it's most likely going to have to mount upside down.
Also, it took me about 15 minutes to get it to fit the 3 inch adapters/couplers. It's a tight fit and may take a little patience. For some reason the wiring harness for the throttle body was pretty annoying to remove too even though I've done it before.

Also grab 1 or two larger hose clamps.

You can get the 3in to 3in adapter from Autozone for 8 bucks, even includes the clamps:

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/access ... 01096_0_0_

It says 3 in to 3/2.5 because there is a 2.5 inch adapter ring inside it you can pull out and toss.

It came in the AM, Installed in the PM.
Here are a couple of side by side Pics. 3.7 on right.
Image

Image

Now you guys said you have to install it upside down for it to fit.
But the only thing keeping it from installing right-side up, is the 2 alignment pins on the intake manifold. (If you install it upside-down the alignment pins are outside the TB mounting surface.) So what I did was to simply ream the holes on the 4.7 TB to match up with the pins on the intake. I did not want to Mod my intake by removing the pins...
In the following Pic, at the tip of the red lines, you can see the original alignment pin holes on the 4.7 TB.
The yellow line tips are where I had to ream them out, to get it to work on my 3.7 intake. The bolt holes line up perfectly and the gasket still seals it.
Image

Here is a Pic of it installed.
Image

It fits right where the original TB was located, I was a little concerned because it is a little larger on the bottom, but there was enough room to fit just like it was made for it.
Couple more Pics of the install.
Right side.
Image

Left side.
Image

Now comes the issue of the air tube.
My DIY CIA uses a 3" smooth bore RV sewer pipe for the connection to the TB. But 3" ID needs to go to a 3.125" OD TB.
I was hoping to be able to heat up the sewer pipe and stretch it over the new TB... But it did not work. So tomorrow I will need to get a new intake tube to go from the air box to the TB. For now I used the same coupler I was using on my OEM TB which makes the inside diam 2.75"(approx). Kinda defeats the purpose of the new TB, but at least I can drive it.
Image

The other thing I thought of, that was not previously mentioned, was the intake manifold opening. What good does a larger TB do if the intake hole is the same size as the original TB? To my surprise the intake manifold opening is actually larger then the original TB opening, and just a hair smaller then the new one.
Now I have the little bugger installed and hoping the rig will run.
WOW fired right up on the first try! YEA!
I was warned by Gageraid the RPMs seem to hang a little longer, which they did. Each time I reved the engine the RPMs would hang there, rev a little more and the RPMs go up again and stay there... I'm thinking DANG IT! It's not going to work!!!
Finally at 4000 RPM it broke, and dropped to a 1000 RPM idle. A few more revs and it dropped to a 700 RPM idle with very little hanging at the top RPM. I think the rig was just getting a feel for it. Anyway, it is acting almost like normal again. Tomorrow comes the road test.
After I get a new air tube, I will post back with more Pics.

Yeah, the computer has to learn the new tb and it takes a short break in time. Mine no longer hangs when revved and is a lot if fun at top end.

I managed to squeel my tires pretty well yesterday when a stop light turned green.
Got both tires to turn and managed to get it to drift to the left a little before the ESC could stop the spinning. Needless to say, grinning from ear to ear.

Good writeup! If you have room to do it, check how much of a an improvement it is from 0-60, 25-60, and 50-100mph. :grim:
You may want to reset your ECU/PCM (whatever it's called these days) via the battery cables. I did mine with the Hypertech.

Amazing what you guys are doing to get to that point, I don't have a Hypertech-tuner/ don't have a larger throttle body, YET can turn my tires over any time I want from a stop light
Are yours that much more detuned or what?? Just can't wrap my head around doing all of this extra work and expense :dizzy:

I think they are Tom. Mine's a real dog off the line, even with the gears. A guy I work with has an 02, it seems to run a lot better than mine.

Come on, Tom. You're regeared. I don't doubt you'd test drive my Jeep with these mods if I handed you the keys. I paid $60 for extra mpg. That's a great deal in my eyes. Feel free to hop on our band wagon when other members do these mods and report back with the same results.

The electronics are probably different in the KJ and KK, too that handle all the traction control and torque management, etc.

I think it's the torque management doing it

It might be the electronic throttle body doing it in the KK. It's sad how much slower the KKs are.

Regeared yes but also larger tires, lots of dead weight ( me  ) and then heavier bumpers/skids etc.
I've never actually driven a KK very far Ted or Marlon never trusted me with theirs :ROTFL:
