Anyone know how to get more air flow out of the stock air box, rather than having to go to a cold air intake setup? When I clean my K&N, only a small portion of one corner of the filter seems to be dirty, leading me to believe that the air flow is so restricted, only this part of the filter is drawing in air.
Help?

This is not the only part of the filter that is drawing air.. as fluid mechanics would dictate that is only the place where your engine likes drawing the most air.

The only way to get more flow through the stock air box would be to change the geometry of the box.

Some well established test and seat of the pants demos suggest that the accessory intakes for the Liberty have little or no performance value over the stock system. The stock system has shown to be overengineered for the job. Also tests of K & N filters have shown them to be inferior in engine protection from dirt. The other systems I'm told sound better (noisier) to some people. I don't see the price/performance values I need to buy them.

My oil gets dirty way faster with K&N.

You Can drill some 1" holes in the bottom sides of your box

Does this help mate? This was the 1st thing i did to my airbox & believe me, it does work.

IT also reduced the amount of Dirt that would have been sucked into the airbox on our latest 2 trips. We had a convoy of 13 Jeeps, & a full day in the bulldust (not sure if you get that over there? Its like powder & gets gets EVERYWHERE) THe holes in the side allowed the filter to pull air from the side of the fender area, therefore decreasing the front mounted aitakes' ability to draw. The intake velocity is therefore shared by the 2 locations.
Have a look at the pics of my dirty airfilter to see what I mean - the pattern gives it all away.

Uhh, regarding those pics, if anyone can host them for me that would be great, as I dont have any other options. I can email them to someone ?
(They are between 90-130Kb at most but very detailed.)

Another option I've seen elsewhere is to get some sort of 1 to 2" screw in cap (like you gas cap) and drill a hole for that. If done properly, you can remove it when your driving on-road, and put it back in for off road and water crossing.

Did the same things on our dirtbikes in drier conditions. If we came across some water or mud we just slap a piece of duct tape over the holes and we were back to near submarine capabilities quickly.

I agree. I have an FIPK that came on my wifes KJ and I don't see any performance gains over the stock system on my other KJ. I also agree that the K&N filter hardly filters at all compared to a regular dry filter. I see way more dirt in the intake tube compared to a regular filter. Unfortunately I can't put a stock air box back in place due to other items being mounted below where the stock air box would sit. I will be looking for a dry style cone air filter to replace the K&N though.

The stock intake system is a good design. Theres not much you can do to improve on it except to add a higher flowing filter. The filter box may be a little restrictive. On my setup I eliminated it. I'll put a pic up soon.

Best solution would be to build a bigger air box...the Dakota with the same engine has a 30% bigger air filter and a few more ponies...and insulate it...

I am in the same thought process as Darby, bigger air box and insulated, an engine likes cool air, if you are drawing air out of the engine compartment then think of how hot that air is going in esp. if trail riding, going slow etc. Drilling a bunch of holes will get more air in but is it the type of air that your engine likes.
Over the weekend while I had mine torn apart to install the lift I took some good measurements and looked at a couple of ways to get more air in from the outside, we will see.
My wife calls my garage "Late Night Creations" so we will see what comes out next as far as this goes

You can take the top section of the "snorkel" that is facing forward, off of the stock air intake. Then, this hood will dump air right on top of it, getting more, cooler air into it. That's the way it was set up on the 2 door convertible Liberty at the 2003 SEMA show. It gives a 1-2 mpg improvement like this. If you put a K&N FIPK there, and enlarge the opening in the bottom of the hood, it gives a 3-4 mpg increase at highway speeds, and as much more power by the seat of the pants dyno as the Borla dual exhaust.

Is that photo of the Silver Liberty with bonnet intake real or just a good photoshop ? Looks interesting, i'm 50/50 on the design though.......that on a black car would look good i guess ?

It's real, just not a good photo. I'll buy a new camera in the next few days. The picture doesn't do it justice, plus it has the old 16" rims.

Here's the other one.

I am thinking this doesn't apply to the CRD, our air intake is a lot different.

The hard top is also removable. You would never know it didn't come as a 2 door, hardtop covertible from the factory. The lift is pretty obvious though.
