I created something very similar to Squeeto picture, but I had to carve a place for the socket to fit on the sprocket bolt head.

Yes, but does yours have the SuperGrip® Anti-Slip Technology rust coating? :jester:
I had to pay extra for that.

On the cheap? I'm not sure you're in touch with how much it costs to make stuff like this on a "one off" basis. I would guess your talking the best part of $600 each to get is made in small quantities.

Of course, the design could be greatly simplified to make it more versatile and a lot cheaper to produce but then such tools can already be purchased for less than $100 so why re-invent the wheel.

That's not true. Very often you can make one off stuff for free or a few bucks if you have the materials and access to the equipment. I've made many one off parts or tools and had friends make me stuff on occasion. The tools really are not that special or complicated. They would not be hard to make one at a time.

Scrounging, borrowing and using your employers time, equipment and materials don't really count. I'm talking about going to a commercial shop and getting a few dozen copies of the original tool made to a serviceable standard. Sure, a hobbyist may be able to knock up one or two for cheap in his spare time but will get overwhelmed trying to put one in the toolbox of everyone that wants one.

I will provide shipping and when I am done we can have a print of the part so we can put it up for others to build off of it.

Would you be interested in cranking out any of the thermostat housings?

As soon as I get done with my timing tools I would be willing to work something out with you

Not sure I could do the thermostats, However if I can get a dimensionally correct print, I could make a few of the tools. But we are talking the aluminum part only. I have a lathe at the shop where I work but the owner won't let anyone near it. I might be able to make the pins from existing bolts though at another shop that I work at part time. Ohh it won't be the employers time, I can work a Saturday and run one of his machines while running my own parts... Gotta do something to make the boss happy, run parts on a day off while making my own stuff :juggle:

My friend s are not what you would call hobbyists. They are machinists and have their own shops. And as far as having them do a favor - what comes around goes around. Favors don't do much for the pocket book until they are returned. Then they can be huge.

I would be interested in a thermostat housing that takes this thermostat: 306 Stewart/Robert Shaw Thermostats - 306

It's what I use in the 6.2 & 6.5 diesels that take a single thermostat as opposed to a double. I believe from 1989 to 1995.

I have had very good performance and longevity with these. I have only had good performance and longevity with these and AC Delco thermostats. I would not use aftermarket thermostats in general. I have experienced very poor temperature control and longevity with them the few times I tried them.

so noone has a .dxf file or dimensions for anything? haha very well then, parts dont come out of thin air, yea its all good and dandy that you told me what thermostat you want to use, the only thing i know so far is the i.d. of the housing would have to be 2.5" but thats not my main concern right now, im concerned about the cam pulley tool, ill be doing my timing belt soon and was wondering if anyone had dimensions, a print or a .dxf file for said tool

I own it now, so I really don't have to worry about dimensions, but if you can find somewhere that will do it in Nashville, TN and want to pay for it, I'll happily run it by there for dimensions when I get an opportunity.

I'm interested in owning one. I have 3 CRD Liberties that are all in the 90k miles plus range so I really need to own this tool. I have found a generic one that looks like it work but would rather have something that is closer to the Miller design. Unfortunately, I can't help in obtaining an original or digital file. :(

Pins are easy and basic dimensions are posted at viewtopic.php?f=98&t=72201 and they can easily be made from appropriate length M10X1 bolts. The flywheel pin can apparently be made from a M8 x 1.25 x 75mm bolt but on the CRDs I've seen the threads in the "bell" hosing are so gummed up as to make a threaded pin somewhat useless. Instead see the 05 FSM for how to use a long 6mm or 1/4" allen wrench to do the same thing (hint tap the wrench on the flywheel to be sure you are going into a small hole in the flywheel not a large cut out and the "handle" to the wrench should be perpendicular as pictured in the FSM)

There are alternatives to the VM 1085 cam holding tool that work just fine and are not nearly as overpriced or over complicated but if someone really wants to look at the VM 1085 with an eye toward getting dimensions to perhaps manufacture the tool I might be willing to consider a loan for say a $25 loan fee + the cost of shipping. If you are interested PM or email me.

I think Pat might have a set of dimensions from when he used mine/ Maybe he will chime in.
