I have a problem with my 06 it has no power off the line and smokes real bad. The intercooler hoses are good. The only code is for the #3 glow plug. No I am not going to do any mods. Has anyone had the same problem and if so what did you find. I am thinking there maybe a problem with the turbo. Thanks Rob

What color smoke? Is it always smokey, whether cold or hot? No other codes at all other than the glow plug?

If black smoke, search this forum for turbocharger issues. There are lots of threads about that. But I'd expect an associated code to be thrown.

If white smoke, search this forum for head gasket issues. Lots of threads about that, too.

Mileage? Timing belt changed?

How recent is the glow plug code and do you have OEM ceramics? I ask because it's not unusual for ceramics to shed pieces soon after popping a code or so I understand. If that's in fact the case I'd bit the bullet ASAP for 4 new metal plugs (Etecno1s from idparts are the least expensive option) ideally combined with Weeks101 intake elbow kit.

When you checked the intercooler/CAC hoses did you do it with them off the vehicle? Lots of times they leak thru what can be small holes on the bottom or just thru porous walls if oil soaked like a sponge. Did you check the airbox to turbo hose for a split on the bottom just in front of the turbo.

Might be just a bad boost pressure solenoid. See viewtopic.php?f=5&t=70602&p=757348&hilit=boost+solenoid#p757348 for the test.

First and easiest thing to check is the plastic vacuum hoses and rubber nipples for deterioration - pull each one and visually inspect the length - a hand vacuum pump and gage would be very useful, here.

The smoke is black and it smokes hot or cold and the hoses were replaced when the timing belt was replaced at 110,000 it has about 120,000. I do my own maintenance, I change the oil every 6500 miles and the fuel filter at ever 20000 miles. The power lose is worst at start off from a stop but it smokes bad as long as your accelerating. The turbo feels like its not spinning up.

Okay, that means it is running rich or very poorly. Let's assume for the moment that it is rich, and that means too little boost from the turbo.

No check engine light (CEL) or codes? I would expect to see P0299 codes.

There is a great deal of information already posted on this forum about turbo issues and how to diagnose. Use the search function, and use terms like "vanes" and "actuator." Start with the easy stuff, checking the vacuum lines. Search for how to temporarily bypass the vacuum control valve that is in front of the actuator. If your problem is not one of those, and your intercooler and hoses are holding pressure (search also for how to check that), then it could be the actuator or the turbo itself. Lots of information in prior threads that it would probably help to read through.

lesson to be learned...... I read all these posts and they all described my troubles...... Guys when they say pull the turbo hoses and inspect the those folks know their stuff. For 2 weeks I diddled around before pulling the intercooler discharge hose. Well a 2 inch tear sure took the fire out the little diesel. Parts on order and duct tape worked for a temporary fix. Thank to all on the forum for sharing their knowledge..
