KK rear storage

Hi guys, I'm installing a Yakima roof rack soon but I would like to see if anyone had an experience with this two racks (see pictures). #1 si sold by 4WD as a 2002-2010 Liberty and #2 is sold by Olympic for XJ but I measure the rear storage space and I think it will fit.

For the back just use a piece of plywood with dowel rod.

No experience with the racks mentioned...
I did a DIY.
Square (2x2) wood in the "privacy" cover hole by the rear seats, and metal bar by the rear hatch (ends pinched flat to keep shelf level). Add sides to keep things from rolling into the windows, and carpet so the pups can ride back there.

I like that idea, I think I'll do that plus long ago I bought a cage with a pet divider so I'm using the pet divider to prevent things from falling on the back seats. Wonderful and cheap DIY ideas.

Cool deal. My total cost was the pipe, P brackets to hold the pipe on, and a couple screws. The wood I had laying around from other projects. I also coated the pipe with Plastidip so it would not rattle on the wood.
Looking forward to what you come up with. DIY is fun and always one of a kind.

Honestly, I made mine a little too form fitting. If you look close, you can see by the "D" pillar I had to cut a U into the sides for the pillar.
Advantage is no one can see anything by trying to look through a window around it.
So it is not "easy" to remove/put in. But I can do it myself in about 5 minutes or so.
I have to stick it in sideways over the rear seats, tip one end up, then turn and set it into place.
The nice thing is the front cross support is wood, so if I bump the window a little when putting it in, or taking it out, it won't bust the window.

It is super strong as well. The sides make it that way. I have loaded over 150 Lbs on the shelf and it handled it great.

It looked impressively form-fitting... which is why I asked the question. I didn't even notice the cuts to the pillar on first examination.And, having a space for storage that is out of view is a huge thing. I frequently carry my SAR pack and gear in the back and that just begs for someone to break-in.

Thank you. I wanted it tight for just that reason. No see, no temptation!
The only thing I have not figured out is how to secure it from bouncing when wheeling. I was thinking of using eye bolts and tying it down to the cargo loops on the bottom, or using bungee cords over the sides to the cargo loops.
It won't go far if not secured because it is so tight, but better safe then sorry.
Everyday driving is no issue, not even going fast over large speed bumps.

Hey Scar0, I'm making this soon. This weekend I'll get the wood but I have a couple of questions: first I would like to see a picture of the shelf outside the KK if there is not a problem. Second I would like to see how you secured where the "cargi area security cover".

Well, first I have a KA. So the inside is a little different. Second I do not have a roll out cargo cover.

But here are some more Pics that should give you some more to work with.
In this one if you look close you can see I pounded flat the ends of the pipe (see EDIT "pipe end" Pic) which hold the rear of the shelf in place. The pipe ends sit in the small hook that would hold the roll out cargo cover end when it is pulled out. You can also see a small notch I cut out for the top of the cargo cover plastic "hook" (cut into the bottom of the shelf). The pipe is held on with rubber insulated "P" style pipe clamps. In the Pic the pipe has slid down to the ground, so it is not "in the installed location" by the notch.
The forward part is held with a 2x2. The 2x2 sits in the spot a roll out cargo cover would sit when not pulled out.

In this one you can see the U shaped corner cut outs so the sides don't hit the "D" pillar.

The weight of the shelf keeps it in place, and it is so tight fitting I'm not too worried about it moving around. Unless the rig rolled over, or I was wheeling really hard.
EDIT
Because the pipe in the rear is so small (1/2"ID) I used a thick walled pipe. I believe it is 3/32".

If you would venture over into the KJ side there are several ideas for making racks as well. Same principal as shown above. I've had mine in for 8 years or more and has worked great. I have a couple of turn buckles that hold it down tight/ no rattles/ movement at all
