So I got this 117k Liberty CRD with bad rockers and a bad turbo for cheap. Put new rockers and a new turbo on it, and it has been running great for about 15k miles.

But every time I check the dip stick there are flecks of metal on the dip stick.

Small enough where you can see them glisten on the blue shop towels I use, but never very big. I finally had enough and started cutting open filters and what not.

I expected there to be some metal in the oil from the failed rockers, but I didn't expect that EVERY time I check the oil there'd be metal on the paper towel. I checked the metal and it was ferrous.

So I decided to do a 700 mile oil change after putting in a magnetic drain plug (I JB welded a magnet to the factory plug). To my surprise there wasn't much metal on the drain plug. So I drained the oil into a clean pan and ran a magnet around in the old oil - nothing. So then I filtered the old oil through coffee filters - pretty much nothing showed up. So I cut the filter open - one spec of metal.

So I filled it up with new oil and checked the level - there metal on the dip stick again! GRRR

It occurred to me the the spring for the dip stick must be cutting into dip stick tube - I see wear here and this would explain why there are always metal flakes on the dip stick!

Thoughts?

Sounds like you nailed it, the dipstick is flaking.

Maybe want to do an oil analysis and see how much suspended minerals and other elements are in the oil.
