There is a test the last Saturday of every month in Long Beach (other places too im sure).

I'm going to take it the last weekend of June (HDR is in the way this month)

Is there anyone that would be interested in taking the test ?

KG6MYI for ID... ham is a great way to go for radios. Very long range... CB is like 5 miles... Wally and I have talked to each other on ham at well over 60 miles away. This can be a great thing when out in the middle of no-where. it is very easy to get set upo today with ham radio and you do not have to know morse code any more. later...Clint

When you get your license, you can talk to me too. I am KG6MTE. As for the rig to get a 2Meter unit is fine with 25 or more watts. I got mine real cheap at the TRW Ham Radio Swap meet that happens on the last saturday of every month. Or you can get one on eBay for <$200 with 2meter and 440 Mhz combined. And of course you can buy new at a HAM Radio store.

Looking Forward to hearing you on the air.

Very cool Jeff. Welcome to the world of ham. Really glad you took the time to get this done. Keep an eye on the QRZ.com site and they have an area for the new listings. Very cool. Later...Clint

Dang, there goes the neighborhood. I knew they must have dropped their standards when they let me in.

Jeff, did you know you can get vanity call signs? For instance: KJ6JP. Congrats!!

so which is the simplest test to take? to be certified. general, tech etc. So im legal to talk on the radio. I have heard in the past about taking the non-codec or something like that because it is easier. please give me the knowledge....

Technician (no-code) would be the easiest way to get into Amatuer Radio. All you need to do is pick up some study materials. Since you're in Vegas, I would suggest going to Amatuer Radio Supply; they are located at 4640 S Polaris Ave, and they'll be more than happy to get you started. You can also take tests online to improve your chances of passing the first time.

Heres the lowdown on the license classes:

Technician - entry level license, no morse code required. Restricted to all bands above 50MHz.

General - Mid level, requires 5 word per minute (wpm) code test. This one lets you get on the HF (shortwave) bands and talk world-wide with your own radio, but has restrictions on broadcast frequencies on HF.

Extra - Top level. Requires 5wpm code test. No restrictions on any band.

Now with that being said, you CAN still talk to the world with a Tech license - just find yourself an Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) node and connect to another node anywhere in the world. More info at www.irlp.net.

And JJ, as long as you have a scanner you can listen to all the smack they throw at ya, then spring it on 'em when they get a little too cocky 8)

KI6EAX, KI6EAX, this is KG6AIT. Congrats, Jeff. Of course, now we can't talk about you on 2 meter any more. Wait - you don't have a radio yet. Ahh. :o
