So i've finally swallowed my pride and am asking for advise. My fiance's 2006 CRD has been dead in the water for a few months and I don't know what to do next. I'm posting to hopefully avoid towing it to a dealership (the one she took it to first quoted $3k just to diagnose anything). About a week before it broke down it started idling high and black smoke. The day it broke she was going up a hill at operating temperature and it lost power and finally stalled. She sat for a few seconds and was able to restart and drove about 1/10 of a mile where it did the same thing but this time wouldn't crank. I bought an inline lift pump after following the no start flowchart which lead me to believe that might be the issue but wanted to double check with the pros before I started splicing into fuel and electric lines. From what I can tell it has the newer fuel head with the bigger electrical plugs. I replaced the starter and it now cranks but doesn't start. The timing was checked as that was my first thought but it is within spec. Is it possible to run a short length of tubing from the fuel head to a cup of diesel to isolate whether its getting air in the fuel near the tank? Any ideas are appreciated as I'd like to avoid the dealer! Thanks in advance for any advice and help. :JEEPIN:

Does your fuel head pump up good and tight (hard)? If it does and it still will not crank, you have other problems besides air in the fuel. Do you have any codes? (check engine light), this may give a clue to the problem. Have you checked all fuses to make sure none are blown? Make sure fuse No. 16 is good. Try swapping the ASD relay out with another one that has the same number of lugs.
After checking all of this, keep us posted...
good luck!!! :D

When I pump it and purge air it seems to firm up but after 15 seconds or so it gets soft again and I can pump another 5-6 times. Just pulled any codes and the only thing it had was low voltage to the glowplugs which was probably because the battery died in the few weeks since I worked on it last. I'll go check the fuses now and see if I can find the ASD relay.

It should have a check engine light on, and probably stored trouble codes that might point you in the right direction. Have you tried getting the codes?

Well - not the initial problem -but after the fact troubleshooting

-these beasts are super voltage sensitive.

i.e. you have to turn on the computer, before it will turn on the engine.

so the battery has to have full voltage under load.
