It would figure the dang Jeep decides to have a code come up tonight. Code P1265, for the number three glow plug I believe. I had planned to take it to VA and back for thanksgiving, but now I'm wondering if that's a good idea, and the Mrs is NOT happy about this at all.

So, is the GP dying/dead and need to be replaced? I figured if it was the module or relay then the code would be different right? The FSM says I need to remove the intake inlet hose and alternator to replace the #3 GP; is that true, or can it be done more simply?

Yep GP 3, yes you have to remove inlet elbow to get it out, I would not risk the drive without replacing you might be ok but once a GP code sets the chance of the tip breaking is apparently high. Idparts has the 7v metal plugs (http://idparts.com/catalog/product_info ... ts_id=3816) and you might want to consider installing weeks101 elbow kit while you are at it (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=78238).

The hard part is getting the elbow off and back on as the back bolts are difficult to reach. Otherwise it's not difficult although you might want to slightly warm the engine (block heater for a couple of hours will do) and shot a bit of PBlaster or some such in there a bit before doing the job.

I see you've got an '05. Some of the harnesses were back to front on these so your #3 may actually be #2. You should check this first with an ohmmeter as #2 is really easy to get to.



Not a huge sample, but the 3 failures that I've seen the tip has been cracked along it's length. Does this increase the probability of part of it breaking away in your cylinder? I think so.

Papa, thanks for the ID parts link. I think I'll be holding off on the weeks elbow kit for now.

Dirt Mover, I will check the wiring with an ohmmeter tonight, just to be 100% sure which one is dying.

I cleared the codes this morning when I started it up for work, drove 18mi to work and the CEL didn't come back on. Started and drove the jeep twice after letting it sit for 2hrs, checked for codes both times and no codes appeared. I'm thinking I'll order the plug anyhow, but should I expect it to come back?

So I replaced the number 2 glow plug (thanks for the heads up about that, dirtmover) with a 7v one from IDparts a few weeks ago. And I thought the problem was solved. Except when I checked my codes this morning I saw that P1265 was back! Could I have a bad Etecno 7v plug? Is there a relay I can look at testing?

The glow plug driver module is that black rectangular assy stuck to the rear of the battery tray, between the battery and the power-brake assy - it's an all-electronic module, available on eBay for ~$35 shipped -
GENUINE MOPAR PART #56044671AC $35.

The glow plug wiring is a 4-wire gray cable to a 4-way connector - separate the connector halves and you can check for continuity thru the gp's to ground, ~ 0.7ohms - measure these on lowest-ohms range for best reading, making sure you get a good ground

The gray cable from the other half of the connector ties over to the glow-plug module connector

P1265 is for #3 glow plug IIRC. You said you replaced #2? Why not change all the plugs at the same time if you have to tear into it to get to #3? Probably about time if you're still on the OEM ceramics

When I installed my weeks intake last week I swapped the new glow plug from the #2 spot to the #3 spot, so that way I wouldn't have to rip into the engine again to get to the #3 GP. So now my #2 plug, that is old, is dying. I'm just going to order 3 new ones and put this issue behind me.
