Hi all:

I have had my 2005 with no major issues I have 121xxxk on it.

Ran fine all day but when I went to fire it off this evening after work it started fine but when I started getting on the throttle it was underpowered and the turbo was spooling up very noisily as if you were throttling up while hooked to a stump.

As I tried getting up the hill the turbo sounded as if the pressure side was blocked off and making the turbo bark or VG turbo blow off.

Note: its not running completely limp but not 100%. No codes or engine fault lights.

Any thoughts, I'm going to take off the front and see if I have oil or shaft play.

UPDATE:

Pulled everything off the front of the turbo and it looks perfect not shaft play, no debris or oil leak and spins butter smooth.

Any and all advice is much appreciated.

Ill start looking into the pressure pipe and inter cooler

Sounds like you may have a ruptured BOOST hose, either between compressor and CAC, or CAC and engine intake - or maybe loose clamp or\and oily hose has allowed one hose-end to begin to back off

FYI: it's call the Charge-Air-Cooler CAC - an inter-cooler is between compressor stages in a multi-turbo setup, one feeding the next, like on the big puller tractors with ~350psi BOOST

thanks for the info.

So I pulled off the hoses to and from the CAC and no ruptures and the clamps were tight.

The sound the turbo makes is as if your power breaking an older power stroke and if you go more than 3/4 throttle it starts barking and the engine seems to cut out or the turbo is possibly over boosting giving a fault to cut power.

Any more thoughts or ideas?

Well, besides the 121 million miles... ;-)

Check the airbox and filter?

"Bark" (as I understand/define it) is when drive pressure exceeds compressor pressure and spins the turbo backwards. By that it would imply you are dropping boost fast.

How's your air filter? Dirty? Clean but wet? Dirty and wet? Furry creatures moved into the lower airbox for the winter?

Airbox clean, filter clean, what do you guys think about the VG on the turbo getting stuck open or closed?

Slow to boost the almost over boost

Odd that ur not getting any DTC's - ECM don't like under or over BOOST, as measured by the MAP sensor

Pull the vac hose to the VVT actuator, see can you move the linkage

Is your tailpipe clear, no obstructions?

So I dug in a little further, I have a little oil on the compressor side of the turbo, I have the EHM and have for about 90k so the intake of the turbo is clean.

-I popped a vacuum on the CAC and I have no obstructions or drop in vac pressure
-I have a strait pipe and the engine has the same tone at idle and low end power up pre-boost lag or lack their of now
-I cleaned the Map

Update:

pulled everything out minus the CAC, cleaned and reassembled and torqued to spec. Also cleaned out the MAP, it was clean but cleaned it again.

Put everything back together and it started fine and have fully restored power.... so I did not see anything specific but its working now.

Thank you to all that helped I appreciate it. Now time for a burnout!

Update:

Ran great today, although I cant place the exact issue I may have had a loose sensor but it works great.

Same power no more or less.

Also I did have a small trace of engine oil in the CAC piping and upon inspecting the turbo pressure side outlet it was very clean, is this normal for the amount of miles I have or is this a good sign I need to ask Santa for a new turbo for 2015?

Likely crankcase oil vapor, which is normal, being pulled thru that hose which is also attached to the CDR puck, back on the engine cover - if you cannot shake the turbine shaft\compressor wheel sideways, up\down, or move it in\out excessively, you're good to go

I have the CCV piped directly behind my transmission, and the CCV inlet on the intake home is blocked off.

I am going to stay optimistic that it was a faulty or dirty connection or just needed a thorough cleaning.
