To a certain extent the + turn(s) amount doesn't matter all that much. Put some oil on the new filter gasket; spin the new filter on until it touches (will not just spin by finger pressure); hand tighten from there keeping an eye on how much (you really cannot over tighten by hand) which should be about +1/2 to 3/4 turn. Do not tighten with a filter wrench although there is no harm in using a wrench to add say -1/10 turn past full hand tight.

The most important thing is the initial tighten should be by hand.

Has worked for me for decades although I will note that there have been a few (2-3) times where I had removal problems.

I put mine on guud 'n tight by hand and use a rubber strap wrench to remove. Never had a problem. I also use wix 51515 or napa gold 1515.

3/4 is a bit much as I remember, I torque it very light, then about 1/8-1/4 more and then I unscrew 1/8 to make sure it's not too tied, then I screw it back 1/8. I never had a problem with mine this way, neither leaks nor overtied.

I only do that because the box says 3/4 to 1 turn. My guess is I am going to far before I start counting turns, so once i get to 3/4 maybe its actaully 1+.

Its annoying though because this is the only vehicle it happens on. This has not been an issue with anything else and i use the same technique. Maybe just the size of the filter as my subaru has a fitler the size of a shot glass.

Now that I think about it a bit more, I always seem to overtie the oil filter on the Cherokee, I thought it's because of the weird position I have to be when I torque/untorque it (need to step on the bumper with one leg and on the tire with the other one due to lift kit). Both jeeps have the Mobil 1 extend performance filters and lubed the gasket before plus cleaning the block part before installing the new filter. I think it's worth to look if the surface where the rubber filter gasket touches is smooth, if it is it may be just you torquing too much, same way I do on the Cherokee for a weird reason...

Over tightening has been my earliest mistakes my history of doing my own oil changes. All I do now is make sure the mating surface is clean and smooth, add oil to the filter, wet the gasket with a small bit of oil, carefully screw on the filter, tightening down the filter using my fingers, and then final tighten using one hand by turning 1/4 to 1/2 a turn.

And yes, I check often afterwards for drips and leaks.

Properly oiled rubber gasket, and hand tight +1/4 or so at most has worked for me for more than 30 years. I've never crushed a filter while removing it on my own vehicle. I always taught this to my guys when I trained and managed a new Minit-Lube store back in the day...dang I'm old...that was 1987. There were times when we would have to practically rip the filter off in pieces that were installed at other places. Of course everybody's version of hand tight will vary, but usually not by too much. 8-)

Sent from my mystical handheld gizmo.
