Installed the Weeks intake elbow kit a short time ago. My check engine light has been on ever since. When I read the intake elbow thread I was under the impression that if you had a GDE engine tune the ecm would not throw a code. THIS IS INCORRECT. Now if I want the code cleared I have to pay $50 to GDE to have my tune updated to eliminate the code. Just a word of caution for those considering the Elbow Kit.

I have thousands of miles on my 2 Els, I guess you are just the exception, or you have a very old tune. What is $50 for an update vs having that unnecessary factory crap attached to your intake?

X2

and the small improvement of efficiency will pay you back for that $50 over time. Not to mention that when the EGR and FCV fail, which they will, you will be looking at HUNDREDS, making $50 a bargain...

It is true that an early, such as I have, GDE tune will throw a CEL when the Weeks kit is installed. I solved it by re-enabling my SEGR which had been disabled for years after getting my first GDE tune.

Keith assured me that there have been no other changes since I got mine, so I would not miss out on any new benefits by just using SEGR.

It seems I did not make my complaint clear. I am happy with my intake elbow kit. I am raising awareness that some members with the GDE tune may have a check engine code thrown after the install the kit. It has not been raised in the thread or there has been some incorrect info. Another $50 that I was unaware I would have to spend.

I got a PM asking how I "cleared my code". For those new to the site, I would definitely NOT suggest installing SEGR, just to clear the code set after installing the Weeks kit!

Just send your ECU to Keith with $50, WAY easier and cheaper.

(Weeks needs to update his info to note early versions of GDE tunes need a $50 reflash.)

I believe they started to roll this out by default towards the end of 2012. I bought mine in Sept 2012 and had to have Keith spin a update to get rid of the CEL from my failed FCV.

My take on the $50 was that it was to cover the cost of programming and return shipping. I don't know if GDE have a special arrangement for those of us who purchased the programming tool?

I am very sorry for the inconvenience and extra expense, I know it is frustrating to spend more than you bargained for. I'll update the wording in the first post of the product thread as well as on our web site so it is more clear regarding earlier GDE tunes.

As others have said, if you got your GDE tune after 2012, you have nothing to worry about. You can always contact Keith@GDE with your VIN# to determine what tune you have and when it was flashed.

As the point is valid, I have to say this: come on, for 50 bucks is not worth the negative publicity for 2 very good products for a very limited jeep model.

I removed my EGR to avoid potential coolant leaks and there is a background code. Oh well, that's not exactly why I bought the tunes to begin with I guess

Plug the FCV back in (don't re-install it), clear your codes and see if the error comes back.
If it doesn't then the error code only represents an open circuit and the ecu can probably be fooled with a small resistor.

Yeti is going to try zeroing out the P1140 code in his 808 tune for me; we will see how that works out. I like the idea of a resistor to simulate the FCV being plugged in. If that works, I will try to get my hands on a plug for the end of the FCV cable, solder up a resistor, and dip the whole thing in some epoxy to make a watertight dummy FCV.

Thank you, Sir, and all who make this stuff happen for the inept among us.
At least I assume I'm not the only one here who lacks 'ept' when it comes to this magical stuff...

I haven't been on here in a whole so I missed your post. I've got about 3000 miles on that tune so far and haven't had any CELs come back.

I have been running the Yeti EGR + FCV Delete tunes for well over a year now with not a single DTC (check engine light). Both the EGR & FCV and all associated plumbing and piping have been totally removed. SUPER GREAT MOD!!!

Yeti is a genius when it comes to all these different tunes! Thanks to people like him and Squeeto and all the others on this forum who had a hand in helping make this happen and available for everyone who lack the 'ept' as crasher put it, to tackle modifying the necessary maps and tables and all at ZERO COST to everyone.... What a great group of sharing people on this forum that makes it the best!!!!
