I recently purchased this beautiful little 2006 kj crd. So far I am extremely happy with the little thing, it had 100,200 miles on it when purchased. Interior is super clean and no oil leaks of any kind (coming from the truck side of the diesel world this was exciting for me). BUT, I can't seem to get very good fuel economy, I have changed the oil, replaced the very dirty air fily Dr and cleaned the MAP but it still only gets about 19.7 mpg. I did disconnect the MAF, but this caused the little thing to shudder and stumble and have no power. Plugged it back in and now everything is fine. But is there anything I can do to increase fuel economy short of putting a block behind the fuel peddle so my wife can only use 1/4 of the throttle (she may have a heavy foot).

Was the timing belt service completed? It is due at 100,000 miles. We have seen many engines with worn rocker arms and this can lead to lower fuel economy. Tires and coolant temp will also make a big impact. The stock t-stat tends to relax over time and stick open slightly, making the engine run cooler and hurting the FE.

I'd advise to get a gde tune first off, this will give you at least couple mpg. Also, as gde stated above, check your temperature gauge, normal operating temperature is with the needle straight up and a tiny bit to the left (like about 1/32-1/16 to the left). It is very important to do the timing belt change every 100k or 7 years, so you're definitely overdue. If that breaks, it would cost you a lot more. If you need further advice on where to buy the parts, how to replace it, etc, let us know.

Yes the timing belt was replaced at 90,000 miles. The ECT do run cold I am sire it is time for a t-stat, I need to start looking for a quality one that doesn't break the bank. And the previous owner had the tire pressure set at 30 psi. I bumped that up to the max psi of 44 for a nicer ride and better fuel economy.

If your rockers are in good shape (MAF readings can help you determine that) and the thermostat is worn out then I would start there. After that, I would spend $20 on a MPPS cable from eBay and flash one of the stock FCV/EGR delete tunes. If you do not see better fuel economy numbers after that you may need to dig deeper.

I suggest one of the stock FCV/EGR delete tunes because the mild/hot tunes can all induce torque converter shudder. If your wife is capable of driving it appropriately that will not be an issue; if she has a permanently heavy foot it could definitely be a problem.

I have personally replaced the rockers in my motor, installed a Weeks kit (EGR/FCV delete) and flashed the Yeti 808 v1.02 Mild Tune onto my ECU. When cruising on the highway at 65mph (5th gear, overdrive, RPMs around 1800) I get over 30mpg with ease.

My Jeep also gets 30+ mpg with a warm motor cruising at 65mph.

But I average about 21mpg because most of the drives are less than 10 miles in town. Short trips with a cold motor really hits your MPG's hard. This little tractor loves the highway from an MPG standpoint.

Made a 200+ mile round trip today to a meeting in downtown Atlanta; first good long trip since I did a lot of the mods last year. Temps in the 40-60 range...morning to evening.
Running a steady 70-75 on interstate, EVIC was showing between 35 to 38 mpg depending on ground contour.
Running the Yeti Stage IV Hot tune with NO EGR or FCV, Weeks elbow kit, Flowmaster exhaust, NO CAT, 2.5 turbo back pipe, gasser air box intake pipe, and 245x75x16 all terrain tires aired to 38 psig.
Fuel gauge showed just a little over 1/4 of a tank usage round trip which somewhat backs up the EVIC numbers.
Additives: Diesel Kleen Cetane Boost and 1 qt. Walmart brand 2 cycle motor oil per tank fill up.
I am ecstatic to say the least!!!! :pepper:

I do believe I might can coach 40 mpg out of this thing on less hilly ground????

What else would I need other than that cable to flash the ecm? And with this can I get rid of that stupid f37 that was installed by the dealer? Would I need a specific program on my lap top? Where can I find these fancy tunes? And who sells the yeti tunes/how does it stack up to the tunes offered by GDE. I have
been eyeballing their tunes ever since I purchased this jeep

The engine computer (OBC) tunes are FREE!!!
You can download and read all about them and what is needed to install on this thread:
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=78418
All that is needed is: the correct tune for your vehicle, a laptop, a connection cable, and the software. (Software comes with the cable)

The OBC tunes do not undo the F37 dealer flash, that is a transmission (body) computer controlled function.
Contact GDE for they have a flash for the transmission (body) computer...

Just an observation on ecu tunes. It "seems", based on reported user data here in the forum and based on how clean the engine oil stays, that gde tunes are better than the rest of the free tunes. This is not to say that free tunes are bad, the time en effort squeeto and yeti put in developing them is commendable, but I believe the knowledge, experience and study gde put into their tunes lead to superior engine performance overall compared to free tunes. Of course, there is the $500 vs free debate, I am not trying to convince anybody to get a specific tune, but I think the regular user should know there are noticeable differences and if money is not a big impediment, gde tunes are definitely better.

Well I would have purchased the mpps cable buy now, but I am moving my family from California to Washington next week and don't have a new mailing address yet. :| as soon as I get there and have a address it will be on order before we can get moved in!! Unfortunately I dropped off my daughter at preschool and rolled down the driver side rear window and heard a loud pop. The regulator cable snapped. Another 129 $ down The drain.

Buy your regulators from Autozone if you have one available in your area, their Jeep Liberty replacement window regulators are guaranteed for life. Ask me how I know, been there done that with my left rear!!!!

Unfortunately Autozone is all we have. Yes it is lifetime warranty but I still can't stand the incompetence and attitude I get when I go in there. I have been a mechanic all my life was ASE certified before joining the military and they still feel the need to argue with me that my 2001 Durango is not awd because their computer tells them it isn't. That's just one of many bad trips to that dreaded store. Today wasn't so bad though got my regulator and installed it in the parking lot. Window was broken for a total of 1 hour. And now it has a lifetime warranty.

I see you've got yours fixed, but it's a common problem and there are 3 other windows.. :) So FYI.

I recently had the regulator break on my driver's rear window. I ordered regulator repair kits on Amazon. Since it appears it is generally the plastic cable retainer that breaks you can just replace them with metal ones. I ordered a kit with both driver and passenger (rear) parts for $43 shipped.

rear http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ANQ5BF0

front http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P30U26O

all http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q7U8Q80

There are also several videos on Youtube that show the process. I'll find out later today if it fixes my regulator

* I have no affiliation with either the vendor or Amazon.

Oil cleanness is a very good indicator, I'm not sure why you say "only" cleanness, as not only me, but several other sources, including gde, mentions that partial burn caused by too much fuel leads to black oil. So having a clean oil is a clear indicator of a properly running engine and fuel system. For me, that's a huge point. I haven't seen any Diesel engine with an oil so clean like the Crd with gde tune.

Side of oil aspect, there is the mileage and torque, don't know if gde is better in those than custom free tunes (I'm not even sure if the authors had the possibility to measure the torque) because I haven't tried a free tune, i already had the gde tune when the free tunes were available, and considering that I already paid for it, it's no feasible for me to risk trying a tune that I know from the beginning that can't keep the oil cleaner than gde (you said it yourself), I don't see the point. I have never compared the free tunes with gde, but "only" considering oil cleanness I'd go with gde hands down. In the same time, you have no proof either than the custom tunes are better than gde, but if you do, I'll definitely appreciate to lay out your arguments.

To summarize, I am not trying to sell anybody on gde tunes, nor I try to imply that custom tunes are not good and I believe that people should feel free to use whatever they want. I just want to lay out another opinion and idea, as a very happy gde tune user. I haven't heard of anybody unhappy with gde tunes, side of probably people that got one of the gde tunes hoping they'll get the mileage of a Jetta tdi or the torque of a cummins... I also prefer to go with a proven tune, made by a company that stands behind it anytime, it is just a safer option for me. So obviously, there are pros and cons to each, but just the fact that some people prefer the free option doesn't mean that the paid option can't be better.

So no changes to my jeep yet, but today I did a 130.1 mile round trip to palm Springs and back. Mixed driving 70% highway 30% city. I kept the cruise control set at 65 mph and 70 mph for only about 10 miles while on the 10. But it netted me an average of 23.3 mpg was pretty disappointed but there are two big long hills to climb on the way back and I sure that did not help any. Once we are done with this move I will be able to start playing with and tinkering on it to improve those mpgs
