If I drained and flushed out all my existing coolant, would it be safe to use an easier to find coolant that is not HOAT?

Maybe although I wouldn't bother (Note - only a complete flush clean water would remove all of the existing antifreeze; a simple drain won't do it). That said HOAT options include Mopar, Xerex G-05, or Motor Craft Premium Gold. You have a NAPA store in Green Cove Springs and they usually stock Xerex G-05 and certainly can get it. Also available from Amazon. Be sure to get the straight stuff not the 50/50 mix as with the latter you are paying extra for the water.

Its just not that hard to find. Look online at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Zerex-ZXGO51-G-05-Antifreeze-Gallon/dp/B0033QNZZ0

O'Reilly stocks the G-05 HOAT
---------
FYI, Some good information from Jeepman on one of the Chrysler forums:

"HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) antifreeze is usually dyed yellow but may also be dyed orange or green. HOAT coolants are currently used by Ford, Chrysler, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo. The additive package in a HOAT formula coolant also contains silicates for added aluminum protection. Most of the antifreezes in this category also meet the European "G-O5" specification for hybrid extended life coolant. The service life for HOAT is also five years or 150,000 miles.

HOAT = Hybrid OAT, ie it is OAT with some silicates in it, not a big deal if considering PEAK or Prestone all vehicle extended life coolants coolants (these are OAT).
The trend now days is low to no silicates and for the coolants to last for 5 years. So, HOAT is a low silicate coolant and OAT has 0 silicates. Neither have phosphates.

Water: Why take a chance on tap water although that may be what you get if done at a repair shop? Distilled water is not expensive and demineralized water is even less expensive at about $5.00 for 18.5 litres/5 US gallons.

Interesting enough, even Original Green can be low silicate and long life these days. Take Zerex Original Green for example @ http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/zerex_original_green.pdf It is low silicate (<250 ppm) and long life (5 years/100,000 miles).

Zerex G-05 HOAT states typically < 240 ppm silicate @ http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/zerex_g05.pdf Go figure on that miniscule difference when compared to Original Green.

Can't go wrong with Zerex G-05 HOAT and demineralized water. If doing a complete replacement, I would also take a look at PEAK Lifetime antifreeze, depending on how much longer I planned on owning the vehicle. Peak seems to be very competitive and readily available here.

You can blame the Europeans for this HOAT stuff. That's where it all started."

Thanks guys.
Yes I know Napa is supposed carry it but it seems the two stores near me never have it in stock. It just seems to me that basic automotive fluids should not have to be a special order.

I always want the straight G-05 and not the 50/50, but the NAPA stores don't stock it. So I give them a call and they have it for me in 24 hours. If you are having trouble finding it in stock, give them a call and have them hold back what you need. Also, a lot of newer Chrysler motors have switched to HOAT so it's getting a lot easier to find.

Keep your own inventory, keep enough on hand for a full refill should something blow. When I was low one summer, I just used straight water figuring it was not going to contaminate the system. BTW, do you have any foreign parts stores nearby, that is where I get mine, but I could drive a little further and get it at NAPA as well.

Flash, I always get the go5 from Napa. They can always order the black cap bottles (that's not the ready mix so you'll need distilled water for your mix). I always used the blue cap g05 which is 50-50 ready mix, and recently Napa could not find it in any warehouse. You can always buy distilled water by the gallon from a grocery store, the label spells out "distilled water". And like flman said, buy few cases and stock it, I use it in all vehicles I have, including the cast iron head from Cherokee and Mercedes diesel.

Any idea how I can tell what coolant is currently in my CRD? I bought it used and have never had to add coolant until I recently replaced the radiator hoses. To be safe I topped off with water only. It is orange or light red in color.

The OE coolant is orange, the Zerex G05 is yellow. Sound like you have some old coolant in there, but at least the right kind.
