Thanks, No codes so far, so I guess I will let it ride.

Keep in mind, it can put you on the side of the road.
It is not real hard to change, and not real expensive.
I would strongly suggest changing it before it puts you in a bind...

So you think it is a good part to change due to heat cycles being the engine has 121K on it?

Might be worth doing a poll of those who have experienced a crank position sensor failure as to the symptoms. As I recall to most common symptom is failure to start when hot, no CEL/MIL or codes set, but it will restart and run once cooled down. My impression, and it's just an impression, is that failure is not sudden but rather a failing sensor will initially cause erratic hot restart problems. Unfortunately I suspect it's a solid state part which suggests it's going to fail right away or it's going to fail at some unpredictable time in the future; as such routine replacement at a particular point in the unpredictable life cycle may or may not help.

The only test I've seen is to apply heat with something like a hair dryer and see if resistance goes nuts but that's not easy to do on the engine and is a test that only proves failure rather than predicts failure.

For what it's worth it's not a hard part to get based on available PNs (5066882AA or Bosch 0281002434 also apparently Standard Motor Products PC766 or Airtex 5S7000)

I was also thinking a poll might be a good idea, also to note these things have been failing on many diesels for years ever since they went electronic. I remember some of the new Power Strokes had these fail with low mileage, I guess ours gave us pretty good service considering the age and mileage.

I ordered the sensor, hopefully it will start as good as the LTD in all conditions.

My friend has a 6.0 powerstroke and among his many problems was that crank sensor.
The sensor has a ring that is supposed to be permanently attached to the nose of the crank shaft.
Well his came loose for some reason which caused over fueling and lots of smoke. Took months to diagnose this problem.
Cab was lifted, engine pulled, and sensor ring welded back in place.
Now he is back to smooth running.
(Although sometimes he wishes he would have just replaced that 6.0 with a cummins)

So, whenever you think your VM 2.8 is witch to work with, just be glad its not a 6.0 powerstroke.

May be true for some, but not all I suspect? I know in my case I had absolutely no hot or cold start issues at all prior to failure; only erratic jolts a couple of times while going from engine cold to warm up cycle to normal operation temperature. It hiccuped a few times almost like the transmission missed a gear or something and then one day it shut completely off in the middle of accelerating up a small grade and put me on the side of the road and would not restart! :banghead:

I plugged my scanner in and reset all codes of which none were showing and CEL's at the time and luckily it restarted...

I used hot tap water while having the sensor connected to an OHM meter to test the CPS after I got it out and sure enough, it completely lost its resistance reading while being warmed by the hot water....
