Where are you located Bevis74 just in case the JB doesn't hold and I get ambitious to do the block swap?

Your amount of leakage and where you see the leak unfortunately sounds exactly like my issue. My wife would drive 50 miles and it would be down a pint or more...with the radiator cap loose so no pressure would build.

Made a deal on a new vehicle today but I am keeping the CRD for now to see if and how long the JB Weld holds up. May continue to search for a used block. This thing just runs too good to scrap it!

So the leak is big enough that it seeps out even with no pressure? I am glad you decided to keep the CRD despite the leak and the JB, I would have a hard time parting company with mine as well.

Amslube, Yes my leak does sound exactly like yours. I had been searching for about 2 months online to see if I could find someone with the same issue and yours is the only one that matches my symptoms.
I can pull the engine. I have all the tools and a engine lift. I'm just very short on time. And I don't like to go to unknown territory when I am pressed for time. I have a small diesel performance shop and it's just me and one tech so with the phone ringing and trying to keep up with my regular work, I just thought it would be simpler to drop the trans. Oh and dropping the trans on this little things is tough enough. It is shoe horned in like crazy. it's the same size trans that they put in the Dodge cummins trucks. With not much access to torque converter bolts. But I do know that I can do it in 3 to 4 hours and so I could schedule it and get r done. Not sure how long it would take me to do the whole engine. Although if I could find a block I would surely go for it. ")
If you could post up in a couple weeks to let me know how the JB weld is holding up, I would certainly appreciate it.
It's just wrong that chrysler has abandoned this jeep. It rocks, when it's not leaking. ")

Bevis74: I'm in NEPA near Lake Wallenpaupack (Poconos Region), only a few hours drive. If you're interested in selling, PM me with the amount. I may be seriously interested. Is this a bare block, any liners, etc.?

All I really need is the block with the liners. PM me what you want for it either way. I won't make a decision for about 2 weeks or so. Still running the "Cracked up CRD" (but it's starting to leak again with the JB Weld) but going away on vacation next Thursday and won't be back until April 1st. Picking up new vehicle for the wife Friday so the CRD won't be a necessity or priority anymore. Would like to get it up to snuff and give it to my grandson who graduates high school this year.

JB Weld didn't work or even slow the leak. Wife was out Tuesday and Wednesday about 50-60 miles each trip. Looks like almost a quart of coolant each trip. Getting worse?? Maybe it will crack around the entire block and the top end will come through the hood!! Time to do some soul searching here and decide what I'm going to do...replace the block or just sell the Jeep "as is". I'm the type of guy who didn't even attempt to trade this on the new vehicle we're picking up today....my conscience would haunt me.
Bevis74...we'll be in touch, thanks!

Well we have lots of WARM here in Calif. going to be in the mid 80s to 90 degrees this weekend. So if you want to come where it's warm I have a great project to keep you busy. LOL
Sorry to hear that the Jb weld isn't holding. REAL SORRY! I guess it's time to look for a new engine or block if there is such a thing out there.
Have a great trip. And thanks for figuring this out for me. ")

Amslube, have you heard of a product called Loc-n-stitch? They offer a crack repair kit for many engines and I saw it in an issue of the Turbo Diesel Register. Check them out and see if it's something you can make work.

I saw that and almost considered doing the LockNstitch but after seeing how and where this is cracked it would be difficult to use this method. The crack is tight up in the 90 degree machined area for the trans adapter plate and when it goes around both corners where there are valleys and humps in the casting. Also 8" plus in total length. Maybe it could be done but it appears this is going to continue cracking all along the side. Thanks for the input!

Based on what you are describing (and I'd love to see it up close some time) I think you just might have a completely forked block. If pulling it isn't a huge pain in the arse, it might be time to consider a drive out to Bevis and his motor. I don't think your situation is going to get much better.

I'm amazed that such a defect could make it out of the factory though. Obviously they weren't doing any kind of electronic inspections of the castings to see that they were successful.

I'm sure it is. I had it out last weekend so I can pull it again if I decide to give Bevis a visit. Taking a vacation the next couple of weeks for some R&R and I make a decision when we get back. For the time being I listed it on CL if someone else may want to follow up. http://poconos.craigslist.org/cto/4929889997.html

If it helps in your decision, these engines are pretty simple to work on once they're out. I was able to source all the parts I needed to essentially remanufacture my engine with the exception of the 3 bearing retainers from either IDParts or MoparPartsAmerica.com. I got the bearing retainers from The VM Specialist in London (I doubt I needed them, but I was replacing almost everything else).

If you're planning to just swap everything over to a different block, I'd replace all the bearings, piston rings, and T.T.Y. bolts as well as the various o-rings and gaskets at a minimum.

So I just found this between the engine and transmission . . . .

Image

I was under my jeep looking at the bushings so I could replace them while doing my lift if need be. I believe it may be coolant since its a clear red color and doesnt smell. I would assume the transmission fluid wouldnt be so clean after 30000 miles. I couldnt follow it up too far since I just drove the jeep and believe it probably evaporated due to the heat of the engine. Any ideas?
