I've had a issue that seems to be progressively getting worse. If I drive for more than 20 min and park the car for more than 10min it will hesitate and sometimes fail to restart until it rests for about 20min and then it will fire right up. I've tried new plugs since they were due and no change. I just put on a new gas cap and added some BG 44K to see if I can get it cleaned out. Is there anywhere else I should look? I just purchased a fuel pressure tester gauge so I can check it if it does it again. Anyone know the psi specs for fuel system? i.e. priming, running and pressure hold once turned off. I hope its not the fuel pump. Any thoughts?

I'm just tossing the idea out there, could it be the battery? Reset the ECU?

Oops sorry I got distracted with a crying baby. No CEL, ECU reset by disconnecting the battery does nothing. Battery is a year old Optima red top showing 12.5 volts that doesn't drop below 11 volts while cranking. It's even cranking at the same speed as when it does start.

Heat issue,common causes are.................

Bad crank sensor
Bad cam sensor
Bad ASD relay
Bad fuel pump

Will or will not trip the MIL.

Thank you, I had those parts as suspects except the ASD relay, I had to look that one up but it turns it does a lot. Thanks again for bringing that to my attention.

How long has this been happening for?
Not sure what a bad starter sounds like on a KK, but I'd check that.
I'd say bad gas, but not if this has been happening for a while.
Get anything wet recently?

Mine was doing that. Mostly in the summer, shocker. I replaced the cam and crank sensors. Took care of it. It seemed odd though that no codes were being thrown. Just throwing that out there.

It's been doing it randomly for little over a month now. It's really hard to replicate. Hasn't been wet here much & it's been a few tanks of gas. It kinda reminds me of vapor lock but that's rare for most modern cars. Its probably is the cam or crank sensor failing from heat soaking. I know nothing about our 3.7 engine & it's common failure points.

Any tips for getting the crankshaft position sensor out? It's stuck in there pretty good & I don't want to break it off trying to pry it out.

Ok got the crankshaft position sensor out and what a pain. It's easy to get to but mine was rusted in there. I used a twisting motion combined with a vise grip and a slide hammer. Popped myself in the face once it finally let go. Then the new one wouldn't fit because of the rust build up so it was some scraping and sanding to get it clean enough. Then the crankshaft position sensor went into the deep freeze as I pulled and replaced the camshaft position sensor, which was far easier. Once the crankshaft position sensor was good and cold, maybe 20 min, it popped right in. No CEL so we'll see later today if it fixed my issue.

It's a no go, symptoms still exist after the camshaft & crankshaft position sensor change. I guess I'll try the ASD relay and since the monkeys at the parts store gave me the wrong relay I just switched the EBL relay with the ASD relay. Since its getting warmer, if it was a relay issue, I can do without the rear defroster(EBL circuit).

I found a youtube video that shows exactly what mine is doing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5dM5--ZXHs

The poster said he had to replace the fuel pump. I hope that's not the issue since I thought it was replaced 2 years ago when it was in to get the fuel tank replaced for puking fuel while filling.

For the fuel burp issue they replaced the tank and or parts of the filler neck, depending on what year rig you have. They would reuse your existing fuel pump.
Sounds like its time to have a fuel pressure check done.

You're correct, I just called the dealership to verify that and what the operating fuel pressure should be... 50-60psi. Here's what I'm sitting at on a cold start where everything is working as it should
Priming-58psi
running-59psi
after turning it off it dropped to 51psi and has held that for 20min. 35 minutes later it was down to 45psi.

Time to get it warmed up and failing and I'll report back.

I'm also experiencing this issue. It's a strange phenomenon.

Almost like the engine isn't receiving fuel... I experienced a similar issues after completely running out of gas granted we all know what the problem was there. They replaced my fuel pump but I have taken some pretty rough hits to the fuel tank maybe that's a cause

And of course when you want it to fail, it won't. I did switch the EBL and the ASD relay around on the TIPM so maybe that helped although I'm not ready to call it. Temps here are about 30 degrees cooler than yesterday which also may have an effect :banghead:

I did notice something interesting, when warm & running the fuel pressure bounces from 57 to 60 psi rapidly. Not sure if that's normal or not & it's only a few psi.

That issue, in the video that you posted, is different than what I think you're experiencing. You're dealing with the same issue that I'm occasionally dealing with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9MME7pEric

I hate it. It irks me, and has almost made me late for work a few times.

Lately, the problem has gotten worse and better. It happens more often, but at least when it does, it usually starts up on the 2nd try, I don't have to wait 15-20 minutes anymore. :-)r :P
