Morning from AK!

I want to convert my fuel cover over to a black, locking, billet version. Yes, even the the land of big oil, people swipe gas.

At any rate, I have found chrome covers specific for the KK, but have not located a black one. So, I was wondering if any has tried fitting a JK cover to the KK? Size and shape can't be radically different...

A little something like this:

Thanks!

I agree this would be a cool cosmetic mod.

Alright... I've been doing more digging. One can get a cheap Chinese knock-off on fleabay for $35.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-Steel ... 1538849362

They give some minimal dimensions on the description. We definitely need better dimensions. So, if anyone stumbles across a schematic or more complete dimensions while browsing the internet, please post.

Once we get a better idea of the replacement part's size, I'm going to pull my gas cover apart and start measuring up the KK's parts. Initially, the door recess is 5.25" across. The ABS piece that sits inside that recess and holds the filler tube is pretty close to 5".

Jeep can't have varied these that much... right? :?:

- This billet door has an OD on the cover of 6-3/4" - Far more than needed to cover an existing KK gas door.
- The door OD is 5-1/8" which would present a near-optimal opening for our KKs. The opening would be larger than our existing door-hole, but smaller than the recess. So, it should look pretty clean, even when opened (which really doesn't matter much, except to us OCD types).

The only downside (and this could be significant) is that it looks like you would have to be willing to drill your body panel to attach the wider OD cover. With a little primer and silicone, one could easily make the whole production weather-tight.

Jeepingirl - Did you just get a replacement door for the KK or put on a whole new cover? (And welcome to LostJeeps!)

I need to get the specs for the official "Jeep" replacement door, as I think it has some of the cleaner lines and might/could be worth drilling one's body:

OD on the knock-off Jeep ones are 6.5" (167mm)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/191508815536

So, still broader than our existing opening, but a little tighter. Still will be drilling the body.

x2 or plastidip the stock oem gas door and get a locking gas cap. The contrast looks good. I dipped my gas door.

Agreed that it would be less-invasive. May give the door a plastidip for a while and see how it sets with me. However, it certainly lacks the "billet" look.

Sadly the chrome "billet" door that you can get for the KK is just a stamped piece. I'm afraid the plastidip would smooth out the details on it and, ultimately, make it look pretty crappy.

If you really wanted, I'm sure you could go to a junkyard or go online and get a used/new KK fuel door and customize it. Paint it however you want, drill holes and put a beadlock around the whole thing. You might be able to design it in a way that it can lock, or not but it's up to you.. Nonetheless, it wouldn't be hard.

Another idea is to spray it with VHT Night Shade. It's used to black out tail lights but has a pretty cool effect on shiny metals like chrome. I sprayed a couple of chrome pieces on my Mazdaspeed & the end result was black chrome with depth.
