After your opinion again guys.
I fitted a lift pump a couple of days ago. I'm hoping this will help my starting issues.
But
When I'm out driving, it still cuts out on me randomly. Just suddenly dies. I had thought it was fuel starvation, but after having fitted the pump and driven it for a bit, I'm now not so sure.
When it cuts out, I need to wait about 15-20 secs then try restarting. It cranks for a while then eventually starts. but when it cuts out then restarts, it seems to cut out a few times in quick succession. About 8 out of 10 times I can force it to cut out on me if I accelerate hard. But it also does it randomly if I'm just driving along normally.
Not long turned 100k miles, and my cam+crank sensors packed up so replaced them.
My thoughts are a dodgy MAP sensor.
The only other possibility I can think of is a dodgy injector(s).
Thoughts on this?

I had a similar problem where the engine would just randomly die while driving.
I checked the wire connectors at each injector to see if any were loose.
They all seemed fine but I firmly re connected each one just to be sure.
The problem has not happened since.

I agree with flash, but anyways, seems to be some sort of electrical issue in my opinion. Check the grounds and the wires for rubbing, etc. I also had an issue with injector 2 electric plug, the dust seal got a bit swollen and it didn't allow the electric connectors to make contact with the injector, this was putting the jeep in limp mode every now and then. I end up removing the dust ring from the connector and haven't had an issue ever since. It did throw a misfire code but not all the time. We also have 2005 and 2006 in us, maybe your 03 has a different way to throw codes due to being a different year, not sure...

thanks for the replies fellas. I actually took #1 and #2 plugs off the injectors just to see if anything obvious was wrong, but then it started raining and I didn't take off #3 and #4. The plugs seemed to be well on, but perhaps could just be the same as you flash.
What are the thoughts on a dodgy MAP sensor?

hi guys. quick update.
Last night I disconnected the plug off each injector, and then fully disconnected the battery.
Left it overnight, then reconnected everything in the morning. My hope was that the ECU may reset itself and help in some way. I also removed both CAC hoses to thoroughly check for splits etc. Nothing, all good. One thing I did notice was that the clamp on the inlet hose on the engine/turbo side was loose. All back on and tight now though. I also noticed that the oil separator pipe on the CCV is split
Image
But I can't see that being an issue when driving, more on tick over i'd have thought.
Also pulled my MAP sensor and cleaned it. Then I bled the fuel system thoroughly and tried starting it up. Took a few attempts, but eventually went. Let it idle for 20 mins. Whilst ticking over, I listened to each injector to make sure they were working ok. They are. Switched it off after 20 mins, let it sit for 1 minute, then tried restarting again. It cranks for ages then eventually fires.
My suspicions are now more than ever a dodgy MAP sensor. Anybody else agree?

No, I dont agree.

By all means, replace the MAP sensor. Its a cheap part but I dont think its the problem.

Hard starting is usually the cause of lack of fuel or insufficient fuel pressure. Or bad glow plugs.

Do you have a code reader?
If its a sensor problem it should throw a code.

Certainly not a lack of fuel, and I replaced the glow plugs about 6 weeks ago. I have checked several times for a code, but none.

Could be the MAP sensor...you have to be very careful when cleaning it or you could damage it.

Cam and crank sensors must be OEM.....pirate parts do not last long.

Try swapping out the ASD relay in the fuse box under the hood (bonnet) with an identical one near to it and make sure the female connectors in the ASD relay socket are not dirty or have opened up...could be the ASD relay sometimes drops out which will kill the engine. You obviously replaced your glow plugs with the correct 11 volt ones right? :?

No code usually means a fuel issue such as a clogged fuel filter....my 2002 Export CRD ground to a halt a few times on a long journey that I took...no codes but the engine would re-start after a few attempts. I fortunately had a new Mopar fuel filter under my seat waiting for me to get the energy to replace it...when I got to my destination a Mechanic friend of mine replaced the fuel filter for me and no problems since! :)

When you say "no codes" are you using the "key" trick and does the odometer display show anything?
After my cutting out experience as above I deliberately caused a code by removing one of the Glow Plug relays...would start roughly and sure enough I had a code posted complaining about the open circuit to the Glow Plug Relay....I now use that code as a "marker" so I know that any other code that shows after this marker is a new code and must signal a problem...seeing as the key trick does not erase the codes!

Thanks for your input. The cam+crank sensors were replaced recently with genuine Mopar ones.
I have tried switching the ASD relay for a known good one. Also no go.
Glow plugs are also correct and have been replaced recently.
Fuel filter also recently replaced and lift pump fitted. Definitely no air in fuel system.
I go away on holiday tomorrow for 2 weeks, so will deal with it when I get back.
Gonna go for a MAP sensor I think. Also will do a leak off test on injectors.
As for the codes, the key trick doesn't work. I used a proper scanner.
