Hi all,

First start in the morning I'm noticing a little bit of fluctuation / roughness in the idle (engine is cold, but it's southern CA, so only about 50-65 lows). What causes this?

Could be a host of things:
1. a bit of air in fuel - bleed filter head (get 2n gen head if you have the 1s gen)
2. somewhat clogged fuel filter - change if you have not done so recently
3. iffy fuel especially if you recently purchased at some place you don't normally use - add DieselKleen which will also help if injectors are a bit dirty.
4. lowish tranny fluid - check level add a bit extra ATF+4; this tranny likes a bit overfill apparently.

1) I'll try bleeding it when I do the oil change soon. I have 2nd gen head.
2) It was changed about 6-7k ago, so should be good.
3) I'll put in an additive with my next fuel-up. Good call.
4) Tranny fluid was previously VERY low from previous owner. I discovered this and added lots to bring it up to top of line at idle. I'll recheck to make sure there isn't a leak.

Mileage has been suffering this last tank also. This CRD, even with the GDE tune, has never seen better than 27 highway / 16-20 city. It's been disappointing, frankly. I can understand the hit for the 5 mile each way trips we take a few times a week to work. But why so low on the highway, and still significantly lower mileage than what others get around town. Most things seem to check out great mechanically with the engine (TB done by Geordi, MAF readings seem within the healthy range for rockers, T-state works keeping temp around 170F, not seeing coolant loss, etc.). I need to check the little pistons in the brakes and regrease them, but the car does seem to roll freely.
