Hi all

searched the the forums for info but so many different avenues to look.

Low oil pressure light goes out at idle after start up.

when coolant temperature goes to about 1/4 reading from cold. Then when at idle the low pressure oil light comes on.

If i rev up the engine it goes out. Then engine does not seem to make any odd noises and still peppy.

But it seems to be using up oil but there are no leaks.

I did a oil filter, oil change and a air filter change when this started to happen.

Seems to persist any ideas...???

The only thing I can think of is a seal in the turbocharger. Due to the loss of oil and pressure.

Thanks in advance :)

If your engine oil is exiting through the turbo, you should also have smoke coming out of the exhaust.
You should also stop driving it. The crank and rod bearings will not last very long without sufficient oil supply.

What does "seems" to be losing oil mean in quantity per miles driven? 1qt per tank is bad but 1qt per 6K mile oil change interval is ok. Did this start immediately after oil/filter change? If so check oil drain plug for leak (if stock and no gasket will leak) and around filter base (if not tight will leak).

Oil pressure sending unit can easily go bad. Ideally pop it off and check with mechanical gauge or simply replace. Report back.

Easiest way to check for source of oil leaks is to clean engine; add UV dye to oil; drive ca. 1 tankfull; find shady spot and look for leak with UV light.

Thanks for the reply

The oil light cam on just before a oil change it was down 2 qts I topped it up till I was able to do the change. I drained and replace the filter and oil plus the air filter. The same was happening after warm up the oil light would come on at idle again. It lost about 2 qts in about 120 kms (75 miles) In the end it would be 4 qts per 150 miles if you take the total of oil lost. Needless to say I parked it. and there are no visible oil leaks underneath the jeep. Plus no odd noises coming from the engine as well.

My first suspicion would be the turbo. Check to see if all your oil has found it's way into the CAC.

4 qts in 150 miles is a massive oil leak and way too much to not be visible unless it's going somewhere internal. I too would strongly suspect the turbo but how it could be pumping that much oil without a) oil dripping from the tailpipe or b) a noticeable black smoke cloud behind you I have no clue.

Check both CAC hoses for excess internal oil. Pull airbox to turbo hose and check turbo "fan" for excess play.

Hard to imagine that much oil vanishing without either an obvious leak or plumes of smoke out the back. You do not mention what the coolant looks like. At speed, oil pressure is higher than coolant pressure. So, in theory, in the case of a cracked block, etc., the oil could be going into the coolant and then leaving via the overflow, though you would think you would see a trail from that, as well.

Good thought but on would think I would have coolant in the oil on shut down. ??

Will check coolant just in case but the reservoir does not seem to have any colour but antifreeze.

Thanks for the response.

Hi will pull the hoses and also the intercooler just to see if it is full of oil as well.

Thanks for the reply.

You also need to learn about runway diesel in the mean time if it is indeed oil leaking into your intake via turbo path. Lot of oil stored in the intercooler is a disaster waiting to happen.

My 2 cents.

I had already thought of that. I was going to pull the intercooler to check for oil.

But thanks for the reply :)

Just pulled the covers off and pulled the CAC hose from the intercooler to the compressor on the turbocharger.
It had a little river of oil in it. So I have a feeling the missing oil is in the intercooler and it will need to cleaned out of oil all the 4+ quarts of it.
The turbocharger I should guess it is the compressor seal that is gone and will need to be replaced. :(

Thanks in advance to any one that answers the question :)

There are no "seals" on the turbo on the KJ CRD.

There is a bronze sleeve bearing that the turbo shaft rides on; if that gets worn the turbo will leak oil into the CAC hoses. With the airbox to turbo hose off grab the "fan" and wiggle it; there should be no to a tiny amount of fore/aft play and no more than barely perceptible side to side play. If more turbo is shot, get a new one from idparts.

Thanks for the reply.

Since the first day I bought it i did the ORM mod and run with the mass airflow sensor disconnected.

Just took the intercooler out not really any oil in it. The hoses seem a wet with oil and the Inlet to the FCV has a small puddle in it.
The turbo its self seems to have no side play and the compressor front end is clean but a few little chips in it.

Here is a link to a folder called Rudolf Turbo. It will have the pictures in it.

Yes I call my jeep Rudolf after Rudolf Diesel my wife likes the name she says it sounds much better then meet you at the jeep :jester:

Thanks In Advance.

I have to ask a few relatively obvious questions. When you did the oil change how much oil did you put in? For a full fill with a stock size oil filter it takes 6.3-6.4 qts and with an oversize filter 7 qts. When you checked the oil level and found it to be low was the vehicle parked of a dead level surface or was it nose up even a little? I ask this because a) from personal experience I can affirmatively state that an oil level reading taken with my CRD parked slightly nose up in my driveway will show 1+qt low but parked on a dead level surface it reads full and b) if overfilled with oil the excess oil while, often rather quickly, exit thru the CCV>turbo>CAC hoses and intercooler>intake>combustion chamber where it will disappear.

Thanks for the reply.

Never had this issue for the past 3 years that I have owned it which I did the ORM and just hook it up to a code reader from time to time to see if anything is new.
Want the get GDE program for it.

May do the Elephant hose mod or make a oil trap.

I Had the oil light come on prior to the oil change and it was low on a level surface 2 liters were added to bring it up. I changed the oil and filter with 6 liters oil.
The light only comes on when the engine is around 1/4 mark on the coolant temperature If I rev up the engine it goes out.
And it seems to low on oil again the only thing that I could do is replace the oil pressure sensor to see if the issue clears (maybe acting up when hot). But the oil level is down again as I check. I do have a sensor waiting for me if that is what it could be but it is the lose of oil that is confusing me and the Turbo has no play in it what so ever.

Here is a link to some pics https://www.dropbox.com/sh/g9hq9i9jj65e ... l5Yqa?dl=0

Thanks in advance. :JEEPIN:

Oh well it was worth asking. I looked at the pictures and those hoses are very dirty. Turbo looked ok; small nicks on leading edge of blade make me wonder if you lost a ceramic glow plug tip. If the turbo fan has virtually no side to side motion and only slight fore/aft motion when wiggled then it's probably ok. Beyond that I have no clue where that much oil is going with no external visible sign.

Thanks for the reply.

It was looking at the intake side of the compressor. How free should it be to spin if spun by a finger ??

But with the intercooler with no oil in it. does make one wonder. But thinking of getting a separate oil pressure monitor gauge.
Then run up the engine after putting it all together. Then watch the oil pressure. I know on another thread that the oil pressure sender can put out wrong information and you look like you have low oil pressure. When the engine is hot.

Will keep looking into it.

Thanks again.

Seems to me it rotates pretty easily/smoothly but I don't recall wanting to spin if you tried to make it do so. However that's a pretty old memory.
