I have a 2006 2.8L CRD that has about 80K miles on it and it has been running great up to now.

2 weeks ago, my daughter started up the jeep and it had no boost, black smoke and power loss.

The Jeep was running perfectly before she shut it off, and the problem happened as soon as she started it up.

I have read the Noobie section in this forum, but I need to hear some advice.

I took the Jeep for a ride and noticed a whooshing sound from under the hood when it tried to boost. I thought that this was simply a bad hose going into or out of the front intercooler, and I took it to the dealer for a diagnosis. (Leith Jeep Cary)

The dealer claimed that the turbo was bad but did not do any further pressure tests as , "The booster was leaking" is what they wrote I find it hard to believe that a turbo cold fail in one start without some sort of earlier noise or symptoms.

I put my own code reader on the Jeep and the only code I get is 0299 (Turbo Underboost)

I have not yet pressurized the system with 20PSI of compressed air as I need to make a test plug, but I did spray down the hoses and couplings with soapy water and ran the engine under load against the brakes. I did not detect leaks, but it was only a quick test with one person.

I don't trust this dealer at all because he wants to replace the turbo for $ 4,000 and even then does not guarantee that all leaks are fixed.

I wonder if something else could cause this like a stuck EGR or bad turbo actuator etc. I did not however get any other codes.

Any suggestions for next steps would be appreciated.

Ken

Did you whooshing sound???
Sounds like one or more of boost hoses has burst open.
Remove and thoroughly inspect all three intake/boost hoses.

And yes, dealerships are useless when diagnosing CRD engine problems.
You need to spend more time reading the CRD section of this forum.

Yes I have read the CRD posts on both this and other forums and the more I read, the more possibilities seem to come up. I was hoping for someone to net this out for me before I waste too much time.

Like I said, my first assumption was a burst boost hose, but I did not see bubbles with a soap test with the engine under load against the brakes. I really need a second person to run the engine while I look and listen under the hood.

I have the Mopar service manual (also of minimal help) which describes a test by placing a test plug in the turbo intake, connecting a regulated 20psi air source and testing with soapy water for a leak.

The Mopar test plug is $ 200.00 so I plan to build my own from an air fitting and PVC pipe. Perhaps there is a simpler way to tell if the hoses or intercooler are leaking.

I am all ears to those that know more about this engine than I.

You need to actually remove the hoses, all three of them.
Inspect them for holes and tears or separation of the layers.

X2 on removing hoses. You may find a loose or broken clamp.

I'm not really a crd guy, but when I check for leaks in other peoples cars/trucks and even air lines at work, where we can't hear the leak (102 db, background noise) I prefer a smoke Machine, failing that I use smoke detector test spray, it's presaurized smoke in a can.

The test plug idea sounds good. Sounds like your on the right track. Just get out there and do it!!

My money is on CAC to intake hose. It's the one on the left. Intercooler to intake. Could be the turbo to intercoler though.

Thank you all for the replies.

I appreciate your patience with a new member.

I will take all of your advice and go ahead and order a new set of hoses.

I'll probably just go for rubber not silicone.

I've seem both versions for sale in a few places on the net at widely different prices.

Any recommendations for:

1. Reasonable price target for both rubber and silicone.
2. Suggested sites based on actual purchase experience.

I value forum members feedback on a seller more then the on-line reviews.

Whoa hold on...

The best financial decision you could make is to find your problem before you go throwing money away. Could be a loose clamp. Could be a fitting popped out? If your hearing a whoosh noise... Your halfway there.

^the guys that posted above all give great advice. But from an actual mechanic i urge you to please, find your problem first, even if you have to tear the whole thing apart... Lol.. Then go spend all the money you want.

Certainly sound advice WhitbyKJ.

The Jeep dealer should take your advice, but these days they just read codes and swap parts. Once in a while you can get a true dedicated mechanic, but even then they are forced to follow dealer policy.

Tomorrow my son-in-law is coming over to take a look and listen with me. Two sets of eyes and ears are always better than one.

At 80K miles, i still think the hoses might be good investment as I would replace the as PM pretty soon or certainly if I bothered to install a new turbo.

Keep the good ideas coming. I've worked on all kinds of engines for 30+ years, but the CRD is a bit of a different animal. I am sure that if I lived in Australia or Europe, I could find a competent 2.8L CRD mechanic, but not so easy here.

Oh yes! Always x2 on having an assistant. It's just better that way. PM is such a good idea, too often I hear of people letting things go and "drivin it till it dies" then wonder why there are ten things wrong and not just the catastrophic failure alone.

Always remember (geared to the younger folks like me), PM and RM is a schedule you can set up for yourself or follow what's in your owners manual, but don't be frightened, it doesn't always mean spending money. The most important thing is to get out there and check, look, listen, feel (not when hot or running!!!), manipulate, touch and interact with your vehicle.

It can be like the hot girlfriend you wish you had :) or for you ladies, the stud. Get to know it.

Good News,

Dent You were right!!

I pulled off the intercooler to intake hose and there was a massive rip on the intake side of the
hose.

Image

I am happy that this is all that is wrong, but I am even more pissed off at the Jeep dealer. I gave very specific instructions to check both boost hoses and they came back with a $ 4000.00 - 5,000.00 turbo replacement estimate. :furious: I don't generally like to go to the dealer, but in this case my daughter needed to use the car to go out of town and I was willing to bite the bullet for a quick fix---- boy did I learn my lesson!!!

I wasted more time chasing this down because I thought the dealer checked the hoses. I just went with my gut feel I would have had it fixed as soon as the parts came in.

I ordered a pair of Mishimoto silicone turbo hoses from Summit racing and will replace both hoses when they arrive. I ordered red hoses because red parts make any vehicle go faster -- right?

I thank all of you for your advice and support. Now that I have joined this forum, I will not be a stranger

Ken
