I have an issue with the transmission dipstick popping out of the tube. Every time I open the hood the transmission dipstick is popped up a little. Yesterday it was up about 3".
What is causing this?
How do I rectify this. I certainly don't want dirt going down that open hole when the stick is popped up

I guess its a common issue. Mine does it too and I recently saw a thread where other people have it happen as well. I know when mine does it because the jeep will start rattling louder than normal as the plastic top bounces off the hood and firewall.

I think its just the way everything vibrates. Mine sits up against the firewall insulation and i think it just works its way out.

This is fairly typical. The dipstick has to make contact with the pan so that it can measure the fluid level from the pan bottom up rather than measuring from the filler neck down. The problem is that Chrysler specified the length way too long.

Ideally you need to take about an inch off the length but it needs to be removed from the top of the stick. I achieved this by bending mine in the form of a concertina for the first foot or so. I guess you could also remake the splice about an inch up.

Some have also:
- cut a bit off the end but if you do that you will also need to move the fill marks up the stick or else you will end up under filling the transmission
- extended the filler neck
- crushed the neck a bit to provide more friction
- used tie wraps or wire to hold it in place.

I used a zip tie.

Using pliers and putting a couple of bends works...try to extra bends and go from there.

A bit of double sided velcro to the tube and use it to anchor the dipstick at the pull out end works too.

I just used the pliers to pinch it a little and now it fits snug.

I have this issue as well. Try twisting the dipstick about 180 degrees as you put the it in. You'll feel a little resistance as you do so, but it hasn't harmed mine in any way. This seems to work for me.

Guys...adding extra "kinks" effectively shortens the length

My filler tube is broken at the bracket halfway down the firewall, and my stick pops loose on its own because of that. I ended up sticking a 12" length of fuel line hose in the broken joint, then sliding the broken top half down over the hose until flush with the break. A couple of zip ties later I have a solid dipstick tube and the friction from the dipstick sliding through the hose holds it in place.

I would verify your transmission vent tube is not obstructed before fastening the stick.

Lots of the Trans Vents are clogged on these, So the only place for pressure to escape is the dipstick tube. My 06 did that all the time right from the time I bought it. I had the transmission out and just got everything buttoned up and back in last night.

Instead of putting the vent dumping right on top of the trans where it can get water in it and will get clogged again I ran a vent all the way up the firewall with the filler tube then routed it over under the recovery bottle and ziptied it to one of the AC lines against the passenger side firewall.

it seems to work well like that as the trans doesn't try to burp from the filler tube like it used to. You could hear a steady stream of air pushing its way out as I dumped trans fluid in. If you do this make sure you trap your hose behind the filler tube so it cant against the exhaust.

I won't dispute that the transmission has a vent and I won't dispute that a vent can become clogged but I will note:
a. the transmission vent already has a hose, with what appears to be a valve of some sort at the upper end, running up along the firewall per numerous posts about that hose coming loose and dangling below the transmission. Under normal use with that hose in place it should not become clogged.
b. on my 05 if I undo the Velcro tie down; remove and reinsert the dipstick until it's fully down in the tube; and then just barely touch the dip stick handle the dip stick IMMEDIATELY jumps 1/2" out of the tube which is well past the point where the dip stick rubber "O" ring "seals" the tube. This is on a dead cold not driven in several days CRD with no possible transmission internal pressure.
c. prior to adding the Velcro tie down my dip stick would "creep", over time, further and further out of the tube until it was sufficiently far out to catch on the firewall sound barrier leaving a 1-2" open gap between the end of the tube and the "O" ring on the head of the dip stick. Internal transmission pressure cannot explain continued creep after the tube is open to atmosphere.

Based on the above I'm sticking with the opinion that the dip stick hits the bottom of the pan bends and over time, unless held in place, tends to push out.

That said I would be curious if anyone who has installed a deep transmission pan and retained the OEM dip stick can offer information on whether this problem continues with a deeper pan where, presumably, the dip stick no longer hits the pan bottom.

It is very true that the dipstick hits the bottom of the pan shortening the length is a good Idea.

as for the trans vent, the long vent tube is actually the transfer case vent tube. The trans vent tube on mine was only about 2 inches long with a little plastic end that really wasnt a valve so much as it was just a lose fitting cap device. Looks identical to this almost even though this is from a GM trans.

The trans vent is right at the base of the bellhousing and sticks off toward the driver side.

I have never purchased through these guys but Good part numbers can be had and use their pictures for comparison.
