how much lift are you running, how are your cv's cvsolution?

I can't seem to find a difinitive answer on how much lift you can get without killing the cv's. And what have you done to save the cv's? I've seen mention of transfer case spacers and double jointed cv shafts. What is there to do with the back of the gearbox?

When I got my winch off I have 4 inches in the front, I'm sitting at 3.5 and just had to replace the drivers side cv.

I was doing some narly mud holes with crazy exit inclines and I broke the inner cage on the inboard joint. Which I don't know how exactly, but also wiped out my hub bearing too lol.

Gotta love Standard Auto Wreckers and free parts days.. It's like an endless supply of trail spares.

I can tell ya the fastest way to change both on the trail is break the knuckle loose

Back on topic: guys have been shaving 3/8" of the inner cup to eliminate binding of the joint and shaft.

180,000 miles on mine lifted at 3 1/2" for the last 30,000 and as near as we can tell still on the original CV's. Nothing special done to them.

Over 196,000 lifted miles, lifted with 20,000 on it, now at 216,000
Left side CV finally wore out at I think 194,000 04 195,000 on the KJ
Last 165-170,000 was at 4 inches and above
right side replaced more but ran a stick through the boot on one and a few other issues

Transfer case spacers?? Not on a KJ, you're looking at SFAs like TJs/ XJs etc

Stick with 3.25-3.5 inches of lift and have fun

Like Tom said, not needed on the KJ, unless your swaping out for a 241OR

And use common sense when wheeling. Don't crank the wheel all the way over if your hung up on something and the suspension is at full droop and expect it not to break. :ROTFL:

Thanks gents, some good info. 3" was what i was hoping for. What's the measurement from arch to hub centre with a 3"lift? Not bottom of rim because everyone seems to measure from there with 16" wheels. Mine are 17"

Stock measurement from middle of hub/ wheel to very bottom of flare when new ( after April 12, 2002 ) is about 19 inches on the average
So Johns response is of course right on
just giving some more info so you know where you are starting from ( well depends on how much yours has sagged)

No idea on sagging, i didn't measure it before i started. 06 crd limited 84thou kilometers. Bought a second hand 2"kit, ome springs and rancho shocks, loved it, rode better than the standard and looked good. Took it wheeling and it was to low, the kit was pretty old and from a petrol model and the rears sagged to almost stock height after 1 week. It didn't bother me because the shocks are still good (only done 50 thou kilometers) and i wanted to go to 3" anyway. Unfortunately there's no suppliers in Australia for 3" springs. I've purchased a set of 2.5" springs and 8mm strut top plates. I'm going to put another 8mm spacer on the bottom of the strut and some packers on the rears to bring it up to 3". Still not sure what packers to get, i was going to ring the arb shop and see what they have. How bad does the front a arm hit the spring with a 3" lift? Ive got new ones here and after forking out $1100 for springs, strut plates & a arms (only supplier in aus that does more than a 40mm lift) I'm a bit reluctant (and a bit broke) to buy jba a arms.

In the CRD, the differential is shifted to the drivers side more than the petrol KJ, which makes the CV joint shorter and at a steeper angle. Gas KJ lifts do not apply to the CRD in terms of CV angle and limitations.

But our front diffs are lower than the 3.7's. Some advantage in that if you keep a CRD under 2.5"

so can you lifta crd 3" safely without fear of killing the drivers side cv shaft?

3.5-4" is fine if you actually plan on wheeling it. Otherwise it doesn't matter a whOle lot if it doesn't see any dirt life

My Mother has had both knees replaced , is over 80 years old and not quite 5 foot and she can get in mine. Needs a little help but does it

On a CRD with stock CV's? I thought 2.5" was about the limit which is why the frankenlift was shorter for the CRD.
