I have a loose lower control arm, knuckle, and a factory upper arm. I drew up some rough jigs on paper by looking at the loose arms shape. The next step, if I'm playing this out in my head, I am uneasy about the direction I should go. I don't know what angle/plane to extend my arms outward from. I would guess perpendicular from the bj or bj bolt. Or to mock it up with the knuckle on and extend horizontally with a level tire on the vehicle. Does anyone know where I can learn more about this

Read up on the tacoma/fj forums. All your answers are there. Don't over complicate it, and you'll be fine. Don't let others here talk you out of it either, it's less expensive than an sfa, with near identical travel

I for one would totally support a long travel IFS. Out here in NV I tend to do more desert stuff than all out crawling and would like to have more travel out of the front. I have medium OMEs with Bilstien struts and yea, the ride on washboard and rock strewn roads kinda sucks. My bumpstops get used no doubt (....hydraulic bumps would be on my wish list).

SFA is cool, but not for me. A true LT IFS would make desert travel so much nicer and cause a lot less fatigue.

Creating custom lower control arms shouldn't be difficult.

Making them long travel would be.

this has been a thought on my mind for some time. I often sit infront of my kj on the ground and stare at the LCA's and wonder. I am pondering using some KK lcas and creating a plug insert to accept the kj lbj. just a thought, totally based on pictures and maching know how...
but for now, totally out there.

The geometry is already done for you. That's the hard part. All you gotta do is figure out how much extra track width you want

If someone makes a set of LT control arms, I will buy them. Just an FYI.

If that happened I would probably pull the front drive line and pretend I have a sweet diesel prerunner.

If I were to create an adaptor plug, that goes into a kk lca, you would be able to use a kj knuckle, with a kk lca. Because the adapter would accept the bj. The purpose... Cradle drop 1 inch, shim the rack up one inch, and this should.. Heavy on the should.. Give you.. Longer travel. Down and up..

The issue is that the uca is pocketed, so hard to work with.. Why the deuce do they do that??? Arg.

Limiting factor s the CVs
not the LCAs at this point
Yes I know I know there are longer CVs available at 4-5000 dollars but that takes it completely out of the ball park for 99.8% of the folks on here
As mentioned before wider track, way more travel, etc is drawn up, I've seen and studied the plans
just not affordable to again most here

Tom's right.

If any control arm modification should be made at all, the objective should be to drop the cradle to keep the cv's inline with the drivetrain.

Dropping the cradle, not hard, connecting the uca.. Pain in the butt. I am toying the idea of kk lca's because of their different geometry.. Obv an adaptor would be required to connect the bj ontop of the lca vise under it.. This may actually warrant a 1 to 1.5 inch cradle drop.. Maybe.. Just maybe. But there is probably some hidden gem I'm not seeing, like maybe excess leverage force on the lbj... I will one day check it out for sure

I wouldn't mess with KK parts or anything else. I would either keep the stock spindle or make a fabricated one. I bet you could get a full setup minus shocks for under 5K if you didn't want all Chromoly steel. If you could live with mild steel it would be easier on the pocketbook. This would just be parts and a widened CV axle. Longer axles extra. I am hoping to get something figured out in the near future. When I bought my KJ it had a 2" spacer lift and the look and handling of it drove me crazy, with the tires tucked in.

I wouldn't mind actual coilovers either. The struts just don't do it for me

The KJ and KK do not use struts at all, already has front coilovers mounted from the factory.

Mild steel just won't cut it for LCA apps, you'd need chromoly or at least HSS at min which will drive the cost up.

I know a guy who can spline shafts for me.

If you guys wanted longer cv's.. All I have to do is bring him one of my spares and he will take it apart and copy it. Of course during the copy phase he will prolly add whatever length I tell him to. But at that point couldn't somebody just reuse their old joints, ya know, just replace the existing shaft, new boots and grease, etc etc?

I couldn't imagine it being at the insanely max, more than 800 bucks for a set of shafts. Realistically, 400 bucks out the door for a set of inner shafts.

I would disassemble a good, stock cv shaft. Bring the inner shaft to my guy. I would say, hey I need a shaft "just like this" except 2 iches longer in the middle. He would go okay and probably charge me 200 bucks each. I get shafts all the time, some custom, some repaired. I work as a millwright ya know lol.
