hi,
i have a 04 liberty (export) has cut off yesterday and now it wont start. i will change the fuel filter & head on monday (they scheduled my jeep for fuel filter replacement but car died before monday)
here is the questions,

-the garage is approximately 10km from the car. there are some small hills on the route and the other car is 75 hp. do you think it will work?
-where should i connect the rope, is there towing bar at front bumber?

put the transmission on N . put the transfer case lever on N . put the key in the ignition so steering wont get lockup
-is there anything else i should do before towing ?

thanks

ps: my liberty has 105k miles on it

You may have a bit of trouble towing the approx 2500 KG liberty with a small car, especially up a hill and down a hill........ the small car may not have enough braking power to stop the train, it is just down right dangerous.

Not only that you may damage something on the smaller car, like the transmission.

Before you bring it in for service, allow us to try and decipher what your problem may be, so that you may be able to save some cash.

First though, we will need more info about your vehicle and what you have been experiencing in order to be able to do that.

1. you have given us the year of the vehicle but what make and model is your vehicle. I am assuming it's a Jeep.
2. Does it have a diesel engine?
3. What is the mileage / kilometers on the clock.
4. What are your coordinates.... There may be a member close by you that can lend a hand.

5. Please elaborate as to what occurred, what is the problem, how did it start, anything you can tell us.

racer his issues are posted at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=82597&p=871772#p871772

Appears to be an export market 04 KJ CRD with a bad seal in the fuel filter head. My guess is it won't start because of fuel prime failure although why there is a 10km tow involved I have no clue since his Tuesday post said it was parked near the dealer and would stay there until new filter head arrived on Monday (tomorrow)

My personal advice is drive to dealer on Monday in another vehicle, purchase new filter head (I'm guessing it has filter and WIF sensor installed), return home, swap in new assembly, prime, hopefully drive. Swapping requires 1) unscrew hose clamps and push (don't pull) hoses off, 2) removal of 2 nuts on the mounting plate (I suspect 13mm or 1/2"), and 3) lift assembly up carefully and unplug WIF sensor connector. Install is the reverse. Tools needed a) socket or wrench for nuts although even vice grips would work and b) standard slotted/flat blade screw driver. Takes like 20 minutes.

I would NOT no way try a rope tow much further than like 100 feet never mind 10 km. Rope tows are way to dangerous never mind the fact that the towed vehicle won't have much if any braking or steering ability if the engine is not running.

since my fuel filter is bypassed (in and out pipes connected together) i was able to use the car.
so i wanted to take a small trip on weekend but my liberty just cut off after 15 minutes of drive
i dont know why that happened since the filter is bypassed. maybe there is something else also broken :/
when the dealer canceled the filter all the starting and cutting off problems seemed solved until yesterday.
now i am not even sure the new filter and filter head will solve the problem.

ok so i wont tow my liberty tomorrow and call a car rescue service

any advice?

thanks

With the filter by passed it could be crud in the fuel has clogged your injectors. Alternatively if it cut off after driving enough to get the engine warm it could be the crank position sensor assuming the 04s have one, I assume they do. That sensor is known to fail due to heat (e.g. when it goes bad and gets hot it goes nuts and can shut the engine down with no CEL and/or prevent starting until it cools off).

I do not know how a dealer would test that sensor but the DIY bench test is to pull it off; hook up a volt/ohm meter to measure resistance; apply heat with like a hair dryer. If resistance goes nuts sensor is bad.

Right Papa, and worse...... never mind the injectors. Depending on how long the vehicle ran without the filter, the high pressure Bosch pump could be done for good. Could be the reason why the jeep cranks but doesn't fire. No fuel delivery to all the injectors or the fuel rail needs cleaning.

How long did the vehicle run without the fuel filter?

Right, I highly doubt that it will make a difference. You have to solve the no start issue.

How long has it been running without a fuel filter?

Ok ..... what were the symptoms you were experiencing prior to bypassing the fuel filter?

before
car was starting after 4-5 sec of cranking and and cut off 3-4 times when i drove it 5 person and lots of luggage in it (when accelerating or climbing a hill mostly)

after bypass
car started and worked perfect when i leave the dealer after bypass. next morning i drove to the work about 25 km. it started instantly on morning and worked great.
then i left it parked at work about 2 days and came back for a little drive befeore fuel filter head replacement and car barely started at first. i thougth it was because cold engine and using without fuel heater. i tried few more time and it started. i drove about 15 km and it cut off while very small speed (i wasnt pressing the gas pedal) and 90 degree turning.

update:
today i called a tow car and went to the place i parked my car. i wanted to try and start the car before towing and car started instantly. (idk how)
i drove to the dealer and left the car there. dealer told me he will change the filter & filter head and put car into some tests so we can make sure there are no other problems. i'll get the car in about 5 hours.
i will post the updates

update:
dealer changed the filter and filter head. told me car works but cut off when idle after few hours.
they suspecting either there is a problem supplying fuel from tank or bad fuel pump and injectors.
now they connected the fuel filter to a fuel bottle they will check if car works fine after waiting few hours.
if the car starts -> there is a problem in the fuel tank.
if the car won't start -> they'll start checking fuel pump and injectors.

any ideas?

thanks

will that do?

btw i am hoping the problem is related to fuel tank not injectors. dealer is still testing the vehicle

update:
dealer called and told me the problem solved by itself after running engine with filter few hours.
he thinks injectors probably cleaned itself.
i will pick up the car in few hours.

everything is good for now, car is running smoothly and never cut off again.
But, today i checked for codes by turning key three times on and off and i saw a code p1130 (fuel rail pressure sensor)
how can i tell if this is a stored code or still active?

thanks
