I just got an '06 CRD I am an happy with it.. except...

I followed the noob guide, changed OILs, clean MAP sensor, replaced CAC hoses,
changed fuel filter.
The car had some minor smoke only in hard accel, and it went clean almost
once the EGR got uplugged..

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and I get the timing belt done and know the
jeep smokes a whole lot...a whole lot smoke while press/deppress of the accel, constant smoke (noticeable) while
on constant speed, and no smoke while idling. (is this helps..)

I notice less power, I was happily impressed with the fact that the car flew by while the rpms stayed below 2600rpm
Now It goes up to 3k rpms and the power felt is not the same...

I pop open the hood and noticed that the mech plugged the EGR back in, I unplugged it yet
the smoke has not gone away..

150Km on the car..

Any ideas what can noob I check.. before going back to the
mech. and try to convince him something went bad..

Was the mechanic who did the timing belt knowledgeable about diesel engines? Hopefully he used the correct tool set to change the timing belt, otherwise there could be a timing issue with your engine. Can you post a video of your engine starting up and running? That may help diagnose things.

It sounds like a botched timing belt job, to be honest. Another thing to check would be your CAC hoses. I had a similar issue after my timing belt was changed where I noticed a loss in power and a small amount of black smoke at acceleration. It turned out that the CACs were not hooked up properly by the mechanic at the local Jeep dealer - otherwise he did a good job.

I had the same question when I was having my issues after the timing belt change. here is what PapaIndigo posted in that discussion:

" a quick and dirty check for timing can be done without special tools - remove fan and shroud (do yourself a favor and cut the shroud in half just below the bolt mounting tabs and throw away the bottom half - makes reinstall and future work much easier); remove both cam pin hole blocking bolts; manually rotate the engine clockwise until you can insert a pin (allen key, drill bit, ground down metric bolts based on dimensions at viewtopic.php?f=98&t=72201) into BOTH cam alignment holes; see if a long shaft 1/4" or 6mm allen key will go in flywheel hole. See 05 FSM or Sir Sams timing write up for more details and pictures. If the timing is off 1 tooth the pins won't all go in."
