During a recent visit to my local mechanic he mentioned to me that my rear diff was leaking fluid and that the transmission pan was badly rusted and leaking.

The diff was nothing, I checked the fluid level, it was okay, and tighten the bolts. No more leak.

I removed the transmission skid plate and found the top of it covered with an oily residue.
It was a messy job but I managed to remove the transmission pan.
It did appear rusty and covered in an oily residue but I can't see any perforations that would explain the oily residue.
Would you guys have an idea?


By the way it's an 04 Liberty Sport.

Clean it thoroughly inside and out and get it dry with brake or carb cleaner. Then put a lightweight petroleum product, I like mineral spirits,kerosene. You could use gasoline if your very careful in the pan and watch for wetness on exterior. Any leak will show up in seconds. If it stays dry, prime with a rust reformer product and paint.

While under my Jeep tightening the bolts that hold the transmission pan in place I discovered that a leak appears to be coming from the side of the transmission where one of the external cooling lines attach to the transmission.
But that doesn't explain why the entire bottom of the pan was oily.



I'll try to tighten the fittings.

I got a new pan right from the dealer, it was only like $50.00. Mine was seeping through just about everywhere. I waited till it left a spot, then changed it out that afternoon. Don't forget to put a new filter in there while it's open!

I left my Liberty with my local mechanic because I'm pressed for time, starting Thursday I'm on vacation.

He discovered that the transmission cooler lines & fittings need replacement.
I should get my Liberty back by Wednesday.

Well Wednesday has come & gone and my Liberty still isn't fixed.
After much miscommunication and/or no communication from my mechanic I have the replacement transmission cooling lines in my hands. But I'm shocked at the price of them; $268 after discount!
darn the transmission oil pan was only $75.
This repair is getting expensive.

Tomorrow afternoon I'll drop the parts off at the garage. Maybe I'll get my Liberty back by Friday.

And the saga continues.
Today I learned that the new transmission cooling lines require adapter fittings to attach it to the transmission. They've been ordered and should arrive tomorrow.
Geesh, what can go wrong next???

The pan probably looked oily because of the fluid dripping off the line, had blown onto the pan...

I was at work one night and could see KJ from the break room, it wasn't until the sun came up and after the lawn sprinklers had cycled did I see the giant oil slick, raging across the parking lot. My pan rotted out. It literally, just let go all at once. There wasn't a single bit of yuck in the driveway at home tho.

It's kind of a Jeep trait for it to leave an oily stain(s) underneath it [WINKING FACE]

As my engine oil oil pan was rotting it too was hemorrhaging oil.
What a mess.

My transmission problems have been fixed!
but at a cost

I picked up my Liberty from the garage after the repairs were complete.
2hrs labour + 2 new cooling lines + 2 new cooling line fittings = $580
Ouch!

The new transmission cooling lines cost $260 and the fittings another $55 plus the garage markup.

Geesh, I have to wonder what will rot out next?
