First a bit of history on my '05 Jeep KJ Renegade 3.7L with Manual (!) Transmission. This Jeep has about 218K miles on it. Previous owner had a transmission problem last Feb. She parked it in her yard. Tranny was hard to shift into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and made a lot of noise while running and in Neutral. So it sat in her yard until May when I looked at it. I started it, with a jump, but it ran so I can hear the tranny. I decided to buy it and she sold it to me for $500. I wasn't able to travel and get it until July, but it was started up and ran fine in June. So when I get it in July, it cranks but doesn't start. Battery is not perfect but I hook my XJ up to it and it cranks strong. I searched here and other sites for guidance. I checked:
Fuel system: pump primes when ignition is turned. 50-ish psi on fuel rail. 45-ish when cranking.
Check for spark: Plugging a spark plug into a coil pack and grounding the threads to the block, no spark.
Replaced both Camshaft position sensor and Crank position sensor. Genuine MOPAR parts.
Checked the ASD relay: Actually swapped the one from the fan and tried several others pulled from a local auto recycler (junk yard).
Going to check IAC valve tomorrow as I've heard there can be an issue with it.
Now this Jeep sat in Chipmonk country. I did find a vacuum line chewed through and I've repaired that. I've also had a look around at other lines and wiring for gnaw marks. Everything looks ok.
Can someone please tell me about the PCM? Or anything else to check out. This Jeep is in pristine condition, inside and out! Only a bit of rust on the nerfs.

I had an XJ that did this.

These kj COPs are the worst pos I have ever seen. They get wet and bam.. Misfire.

Here what I want you to try. Check the negative battery terminal... I know, I know... Just check it. Then I want you to recheck a spark plug against the neg terminal. If you get spark, check your engine ground. Also check to make sure the pcm is getting power. Had an xj one blow a fuse once from excessive winching.

Failing that, you gotta put a volt meter to the circuitry all the way from pcm to the power distribution block, down to the engine.

As far as the tranny making noise... Is it dry?

Thanks for the reply! I'll try what you recommend. As far as the tranny goes, I haven't really checked it out because I'm a bit focused on why I can't get it started for now.

That would bet second priority. Take the fill plug off the tranny and dipping my finger in there.

But ya, fastest way to check the engine ground, is to ground the spark right to the batt.

ok thanks, I'll go down sometime today and try it out. As far as PCM goes, I'm have trouble finding any kind of wiring diagram for it. I know absolutely nothing about PCMs. There's a few KJs with PCMs, here in the local yard. I'm guessing you just can't pull one and slap it in. All of them are automatics and I'm also guessing those wouldn't work.

Ok...so here's an update. So I brought a somewhat auto-competent friend with me to help troubleshoot. He went right for the ASD relay. From there he started checking voltages and instantly came to a conclusion that there's no voltage on the common side of that relay...if I'm understanding it right. So we took the cover off of an extra relay, plugged it in, in place of the original ASD relay. He manually closed the contacts using a piece of card board from his cigarette pack and...vroom. She started up. He says it's probably the PCM not sending a signal to that relay.
I was able to drive it back to my house thru the city. Tranny didn't give me much of a problem. Once in a while, i wasn't able to cleanly put it into a gear, especially Reverse, until engine RPMs went down.

Okay so the engine ground is good. In one of the two fuse boxes, there will be a ten cent fuse for the PCM, pull it and make sure it isn't blown.

I had this happen to an xj of mine. It blew while I was winching out of a mud hole. I could crank the engine all day, all the lights on the dash would work, but it wouldn't Fire. Replaced all kinds of sensors and nothing. Checked the fuses and found the pcm fuse was blown.

But from the way your describing the drive home... It sounds like the PCM either isn't working right.. Or is f'ed. Perhaps the power distribution box has a loose connection?? It's hard to tell because I'm not "there"

I wasn't able to spend much time looking at it in the last couple of days (long work hours), but I did have a peek at the fuses. I couldn't find one for the PCM inside the Power distribution box. I don't know where the other fuse box is, lol. Here's a couple of useful links I came across from other forums tho, and you might have seen them already...
This one makes me wonder if it's something telling my PCM to break the ASD circuit...
http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html
This one is just a handy link for lots of stuff...
http://connectors.dcctools.com/home.htm

So after plugging in the info on that second link...05 KJ, going to Powertrain Control Module C3 blk/natural... I see the ASD relay circuit no. is K342, and the wire is a 20 gauge brn and white wire.
