I'm voting bad rockers. My rig idled just fine (except for a knock/thump that seemed to come from the passenger side)and drove 1000 miles with a bad rocker. If your injectors test out ok, I would begin pulling the manifold and order a full timing belt set along with a new set of rockers.

Glow plug.....doubtful unless he has a check engine light. I would get a check engine light within 5 seconds of starting when i had a bad plug.

I have had a boost hose pop off. Obvious loss of power, but no thumping noises.

I doubt you have a failed injector but there is a diesel injector shop in Port Kells that ran full testing on my injectors for $50 each with a full report printed out.

If the turbo has no play, then I would lean towards broken rockers.

Definitely the rockers then. If you haven't already done so, you will need the full timing kit as well as the rockers, 4 crush washer and o-rings, probably an intake gasket (lately they haven't been coming off politely) and then I would *strongly* suggest the ARP studs and the elbow kit to prevent future issues and the labor overlaps for the studs - might as well do them now.

If you need technical assistance, the forum is full of all you need to know, if you want labor assistance, I can be available depending on your location.

Good luck, I'm in the midst of rebuilding two engines a lot deeper than this right now - this job almost seems easy by comparison. Almost.

ok cell phone being annoying, cant download my video......argh..

HOWEVER,...

I did pull the following codes. NOW PLEASE be aware these MAY OR MAY NOT be related to the issue at hand, DUE to three months of unplugging sensors, deleting stuff etc........and NEVER erasing any of the codes or CEL for over three months......

codes:

- PO0401
- PO1189
- PO0700
- PO0102
- PO0299
- PO0299 (SHOWED UP TWICE)

updates:

pulled the FCV and intake horn, fully expecting a solid mass od black death sludge and soot. Just a little on the surfaces of the components.....and the FCV was working great no stripped gears and the butterfly valve was clean and shiny.

I did find a block off shim on the drivers side EGR tube that comes from the pass side, thats from the PO. No blockage or any buildup in the EGR tube!

next im pulling the injectors (after marking them 1,2,3,4) and sending them off for flow testing, inspection etc.

pretty sure the glow plugs (darn their hidden deep!) are not the culprit.......i cna fire the engine up no prob. Old Man (pops) says it sounds like an exhaust valve stuck open.......so i'm leaning towards a fugged rocker.... (DAMMIT!)

so i'm going to dive into this repair. Still need to save up for the parts .........

from ID parts

- timing belt kit $400 USD

- rocker arm and lifter set $370 USD

- valve cover gasket $40 USD

- WEEKs stage 1 +2 $225 USD

about $50 for shipping

now the crappy part....the Canadian exchange rate....

1,100.00 USD = 1,439.85 CAD
US Dollar ↔ Canadian Dollar
1 USD = 1.30895 CAD 1 CAD = 0.763971 USD

and add in duties and taxes at the Canadian border.....about another $200 - 300 bucks...

ouch..

i did the same repairs in march that you listed here along with the TC exchange was not bad back then but i had to pay an arm and leg for labor. All said and done i am loving the jeep again and looking back should have got the repairs done sooner than later.Good luck.

thanks man. Crappy part is i STILL owe over $6400 to the old man (pops) for the loan he gave me......

so hopefully in a year or so the USD and CDN $$$$$ exchange may be at par again.....

:2cents:
