I have been using Mobil 1, 0W40 grade per the owner's manual recommendation. I didn't see anything that would restrict the oil splash in the area, I think it's a poor design.

What oil have you used?

Thanks,

Kurt

FYI: I opened valve cover, replaced rockers and ARP studs as a preventative measure. I was doing timing belt job so I was best time to do it. If you have any question on tear down or assembly then feel free to PM me.

Well, it's been quite a while but I am happy to say the Jeep is back on the road as good as new! The rockers, as many of you suggested many times, we're the problem all along. If the dealer had properly diagnosed this last summer it would have been fixed then!
The terrible knocking sound is now replaced by the normal diesel grumbling purr which is normally heard.
Withe new rockers and the GDE tune package it runs great and probably will for another 100K miles. I also replaced the timing belt, water pump, idlers, tensioner and the accessory belt.
Thanks for all your input, it was quite an adventure!

Hope you did ARP studs while you were there.
